Can't connect to Network shares

I think there was a windows update today. I have been using PIA for about a year with no issues. Today, when I try to connect to my network shares by name (\\SHARE) I can't connect. But if I use the IP address (\\192.168.1.2) it works just fine. Again, this issue just started today. Does anyone have an idea of what I need to check?

  • I'm noticing this, too. I've never had any issues before, but now my shares will either not load at all, or they will take far longer than they should.

When I disconnect from PIA, the shares load up instantly every time.
  • I am experiencing the same problem. Windows shares only work when PIA is disconnected. Anyway to fix this?
  • Same here. Updated Windows 10 yesterday on both machines and now my network shares only work when NOT connected via PIA. I tried turning NetBIOS on over TCP/IPv4 as I had seen some people complaining elsewhere that the Windows 10 update screwed theirs up but it made no difference.
  • Here is the solution that worked for me (from Andre at Microsoft Answers):

    Press Windows key + R
    Type: optionalfeatures.exe
    Hit Enter

Scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support
    Tick the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client
Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal (did not see this in my install) and
    Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Server

    Click OK
    Restart if prompted.

  • Interesting. Thanks, VanillaXtract. I'll give that a shot when I get home.
  • Thanks, but it didn't fix it for me so I changed the flags back.

One workaround that I found helps is to connect to one of my network drives before I start the PIA client. Then they work even with the VPN on.
