New Remote Desktop Connection issue

Hi:

My laptop has just installed the April Windows 10 Update. I don't know whether the following problem was caused by the update, but it seems worth mentioning. Immediately after the update installation, I now find I can't connect to other computers on my home network unless I first disable PIA. I can then reconnect PIA after I am connected and maintain my remote desktop connection. I need help to figure out how to use Remote Desktop Connection without first disconnecting PIA.

I contacted PIA help, but was told this issue is not within their purview. I also did a search in this forum, but found only one unanswered post.

Thank you for any help.

  • I also have the same issue. I use Remote PC and Private internet, and I have to disable Private Internet to be able to login to my remote pc.

I had a similar issue some thing ago with connections to my modem. When the PIA software was not running on my laptop, I could connect to my modem and my router. After starting the PIA software I could still connect to my router, but not the modem.

After days and hours of trouble shooting I finally realized it was the route table on my laptop that was giving me grief. Once I set a route to the modem I could connect to the modem with PIA running.

This could be what is happening to you. Try setting a route to your other computer's IP address or network address.

Can't guarantee this will work, but it is worth a try.

Here is a better description of what I see was going on.

  • Hello All,

I am sorry for the inconvenience of the issue. Unfortunately, our VPN primarily acts as a firewall and adds security to your connection. It is entirely expected that server-type applications would not be accessible from the outside world. If you still know your ISP assigned IP address, you would likely be able to bypass the VPN and access these types of server applications. Their traffic, of course, would not be secured, and we would not be able to offer to troubleshoot if you have issues. This is why Remote Desktop (RDP) is not available with our service, The VPN will need to be turned off in order to complete RDP.
