So lost...configuring ASUS RT-AC86U with PIA & Open VPN?

Does anyone know the best method to get PIA & Open VPN working with the ASUS RT-AC86U?

There is so much information out there and none of it is current.  I have tried ASUS stock and Merlin firmware options and I cannot seem to get things working. As soon as I flip on PIA I am unable to access my router.

Right now I have the latest MERLIN firmware 384.5 flashed, OpenVPN GUI installed and connected to US Midwest.

PIA Settings: https://photos.app.goo.gl/YIreBPEVJob7MLjm2

All of my Windows settings are default...am I missing something there?  Firewall or any other security settings?

Spent about a week trying to get this to work and just about ready to give up.

Appreciate any help.  <3

The image you posted shows your windows PIA app settings.

If you are intending to have PIA openvpn running on your router with Merlin firmware then you should check this thread >> https://www.snbforums.com/threads/how-to-setup-a-vpn-client-including-policy-rules-for-pia-and-other-vpn-providers-380-69_2-03-29.30851/

It works fine for me on asus rt68u, no reason why it shouldnt work for 86u

this can be set up to protetct all your devices so that you then dont need the PIA apps on your individual devices

Tried those steps with no luck. When I click activate it just gives me the spinning wheel.  When I connect to PIA I get a 401 error on router.asus.com

This is super in depth and a bit over my head, im afraid. i dont need fort knox, just a working VPN setup. ill revisit that when i graduate from NEWB status.

    Anyone else got any suggestions?

That link provided by p2777564 is not the Fort Knox of VPN. It is the actual settings for PIA. There are three main images. First is setup for AES-128. Second is setup for AES-256. So pick one of the images and copy the settings as they are. That will at least get you in the ball park. The third image is custom commands. Highly recommend you copy them and enter them into your router's custom command section.

Give it a try. You really have nothing to lose. And for the mean time, disable your PIA app on your local machine. It just slows things down. You can reactivate it if you are still having issues with the router.
  • ill give it a go ASAP and report back, thanks.
  • Success, at least I think so.

Now to get my torrents going. Tried Deluge and qBittorrent and I am unable to get any incoming connections.
