PIA keeps phoning home to remote servers even when turned off?

Ever since I upgraded PIA, it keeps trying to connect to several different remote servers even though I do not have PIA connected. I know this because I have Little Snitch running. I'm on a Mac. Why is it doing this?

    The software periodically updating its server address list to give you the fastest server to connect to.
