no "robot" icon in notification bar after 18.04 LTS upgrade

I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04 LTS, and now I don't see the robot icon. I tried to install PIA v8.0, but got the message
Private Internet Access is already running. Please quit it and run the installer again

I tried to uninstall PIA using the instructions on https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/kb/articles/how-can-i-uninstall-reinstall-your-application-on-linux, but I still get the same error even after rebooting.

FWIW, I had to do a clean install of 18.04 LTS from live disk, rather than the standard upgrade (for reasons beyond the scope of this discussion).

Please let me know what additional system info you need.

Comments

  • it appears you enabled the "Start application at login" and (or?) the "Auto-connect at launch" options. when you see the already running message, check the output of ps ax | grep pia to see what PIA client process(es) are running. once you've worked through those issues, post here again if the app indicator (icon) is still missing.
  • Killed all PIA processes and now it installed fine.

Perhaps this should be documented in the uninstall/reinstall instructions? Maybe?
  • typical instruction is to completely shut down the thing you want to upgrade before you start upgrading
