Encryption device for 1gb connection

ATT Gigafiber is coming to my neighborhood soon.  I am a long time PIA user and it bothers me that ATT is sniffing everyone's connection now with GigaFiber.  To opt out cost $30 from what I understand and them not doing the sniffing is not guaranteed even then.  How much of a device would it take to encrypt a full 1gb connection? From what I understand my little Asus Nighthawk is not going to do this with DD-WRT

  • I doubt you will get 1Gbps through any VPN since most of the servers are 1Gbps shared between multiple users.
  • For something like this, a pfSense box is likely your best bet.

Keep in mind that since OpenVPN is single threaded, the clock speed of the processor you choose is going to be more important than the number of cores. Even then, many ISPs don't handle large connections like that particularly well, so there may be a bottleneck to our servers, even if our servers themselves are capable of saturating your connection.

With a well-equipped pfSense router, I've seen people pull 800mbps off the VPN, although 500-600mbps is more typical.
