Incredibly slow speeds

I use the web-based speed test PIA provides and I average around 800Mb or so. When I connect to that server, I am not getting more than 250 at most. I have a gigabit connection and PIA has never been so slow for me ever. I am using W10 with the latest updates and the latest version of the client. I connected right from my pfSense router and the speeds are even worse. I can't get more than 40Mb or so when I used to be able to pull almost my full Gb speeds that way. it all seemed to start when PIA and Linus got together after they dropped Tunnel bear as a sponsor. I believe PIA is overloaded with too many users.

If this continues, I will be forced to look elsewhere for a better VPN.

  • are you using AES -NI ?  128 bit or 256 bit connection to PIA?

what are you send and recieve buffer's set too?

I am sorry to hear about the speed issues! If you could, please email us at [email protected] with the subject as: ATTN:SMR we'd be more than happy to assist you further with this!

I assume you mean from pfSense since the client app doesn't have buffer control. My send receive buffer is set to the default value, but I did test all values from 256KiB through 2MiB with results that are essentially identical. I used to easily be able to get 600Mb+ from the pfSense VPN connection without fiddling with anything, this was maybe a month ago. My CPU in my pfSense machine does not have AES-NI instructions but the CPU usage at those speeds never goes over ~25% so there is more than enough power to handle it in software. I can experiment somewhat on this if you think it might be my problem. However, for some strange reason, I got a one time spike of 500Mb last night after more testing which immediately went back down well below 200Mb immediately, so I know my connection and my hardware can handle a good speed.

On the CLient, I use the 128bit option there as well. This used to get me almost 800Mb regularly in practice and this continued since I first signed up for PIA till about a month ago when the poor performance started. No configurations changed except I did update the desktop APP just in case that was the issue, it didn't help.

Basically, I was getting 80% of my total data connection through the VPN, which is more than acceptable, to now getting 20% or less on a good day which is far from acceptable without any form of config change. if the loss was closer to 50% I would be happy since I have a lot of data in my network at times going out to the internet that is not going through the VPN tunnel. I did all of my testings while every person on the network was out to work and I myself was the only user of any data. I also tested my connection and I can very easily get my full gigabit speeds all day long when not through the VPN tunnel, this was just to eliminate there being a possible connection issue on my side.

I received an email when I stopped my auto-renewing payments for my subscription. It will remain off until I can get my speeds back and if not, well, you get the idea. I will do some more testing and will respond there. Thanks.

i wish a had a faster connection but with my 100Mb download on 256bit cipher.    send and receve at 256k.   i got my full speeds (DEPENDING ON THE SERVER)    i was stuck on using the closest server as that is what is always suggested.   well my closest server was the slowest.    i merged out and tried a server several states away and my speeds were MUCH faster..
good luck i hope you find a resolution with staff here. i'd love to hear about it
