Win Desktop App not secure for Geo unblocking?

edited July 2018 in Windows VPN Setup
Sorry, I think I posted this in the wrong section. Can PIA Mod please move it to Support section

I was testing access to BBC iPlayer and the results were:

Using Windows 10 Desktop App Connected to Southampton server -> Unsucessful streaming on BBC iPlayer - It detects that I'm not in UK

Using Chrome Extension Connected to Southampton server -> Successfully streamed content on BBC iPlayer

So this leads me to the conclusion that either I have not set up my Desktop App setting correctly or that the PIA Desktop App is not secure.

As far as the setting on the Desktop APP go, have the following

Connection type: TCP (I tried UDP and Port Auto and that does not even allow going the bbc.co.uk site)
Port: 110
PIA MACE: OFF
Kill Switch: OFF
DNS LEAK Protection: ON
IPv6 Protection: ON
Use Small Packets: ON
Debug Mode: ON

If anyone has any suggestions on getting iPlayer to work by using the PIA Desktop App, I'd appreciate the help.

Thank you!

  • Geo-blocking of content is an annoyingly frequent obstacle for several people throughout the earth. Geo-blocking is when online content is confined to a particular nation or situation.

Websites are apt to do this by reading the IP address of everyone obtaining their content, so they see each location. If that location appears to fall outside of a content’s jurisdiction, then that it is blocked.
  • Hello jbloggs,

We would love to assist you in troubleshooting, however if you input the original message here: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/new-ticket then we can take a further look. However, Nejc is correct about Geo-blocking content. This is also refereed to as Blacklisting.  Unfortunately, blacklisting of IPs is a very common problem with VPNs. Some large websites, including retailers, streaming services, banks, and marketplaces like craigslist, place a blanket ban on VPN use. Their security sees our anonymous IP address as a potential threat so they block us out. While we rotate our IPs regularly, we are unable to render support or assistance in accessing restricted content via our service.

You may be able to change servers and or ports to obtain an IP address that is not blacklisted. Your VPN may need to be turned off to access these websites. If you haven't already, please try other servers to see if it will allow a connection. Another option would be to try using one of our browser extensions as they do use some different IP's that may allow a connection.
