Help me...! Can I install on router ?

I'm slightly technologically challenged but was wondering if it's possible to install PIA on my modem/router instead of each individual computer? My router is an Actiontec GT784WN. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some routers have the ability to support VPN client. But if your router has the ability to be a VPN server, that will not work with PIA. The VPN client support in the router may allow you to log into PIA and use their server. If your router does not support VPN client, then you might have to reload firmware by DD-WRT which does have VPN client support. Not all routers are supported by DD-WRT. My Belkin F9K1113V4 does not support VPN client nor can I load DD-WRT.

    Hope this helps
  • Hello All,

To shed come light on the router set up issue at hand: Almost any router with VPN capability could work with our service. However, we only offer ready VPN setup guides for routers using specific router firmware. Here is a list of routers compatible with each of the currently supported firmware types:

    DD-WRT -- http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices
    Tomato -- http://tomatousb.org/doc:build-types
    Pfsense -- https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/What_hardware_is_supported
    https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/IPsec_Compatibility#IPsec_Compatibility

However, if you can not locate your router within the above lists, it would appear that we do not support your router or your router does not directly support VPN services.

The directions for router-based VPN setups for this firmware can be found on this page: https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/sections/204236038-Setup-Guides-Router

In all likelihood, you will need to install ("flash") such custom router firmware onto your router. Please be aware that router flashing falls outside our support scope, and doing so would be at your discretion and liability.

It may be possible to configure VPN use on stock or other firmware, provided it has VPN configuration options, but we would not have a ready guide for its use. Connecting to PIA on your router can be a great tool to use to protect multiple devices at one time, or to protect any device that we currently do not support - but not all routers are compatible.

If you require assistance, please let us know. As an alternative, your more than welcome to create a Support Ticket here: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/new-ticket. Thank you from the PIA-CS Team
  •  That is when you opt for installing a VPN client on your router. With a VPN client on your router, someone practicing your local network to window-shop the web or access a cloud service will mechanically be practicing the VPN as it will is operating 24x7.
  • If you connect your router to an existing modem or an ISP gateway, you probably already have a good idea of how your Internet works, but it's still worth checking. A bad connection can be a long and frustrating attempt to install the router, while the router has no problem.
If you are installing your router as part of a move to a new house or apartment, it is even more important to make sure you have an active Internet connection, since you may be configuring your router in parallel. to a newly installed or activated Internet. a service.

To check the status of the Internet, simply connect to your ISP modem or gateway via an Ethernet cable and connect it directly to your laptop or desktop computer. (If you do not have an Ethernet port on your laptop, you must obtain an Ethernet adapter). If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can configure the router.
  • There are some routers that are VPN compatible but for some are not you need to flash it according to this guide.
  • Hello All! Yes, not all routers ate compatible as chrispeddler stated. the guides presented in this forum should assist anyone who has questions about the Router set ups. - PIA CS TEAM
