Microsoft Office 365 Very Slow To Open When PIA VPN Active?
Hi,
Hoping to find a solution to below issue (other than disabling PIA VPN):
When PIA VPN is active, Microsoft Office 365 is very slow to open?
(If I disable PIA VPN, then Microsoft Office 365 opens fast and normally)

Anyone have any idea on how to fix above issue?
Thanks!

I disconnected the Internet and ran Microsoft Office 365 - opened in 2 seconds.
When PIA VPN is active, MS Office 365 takes over 20 seconds to open.
Any ideas?
Jesse
I am sorry for the inconvenience of the issue. This may be related to the speeds your device is encountering while the VPN is active/enabled. The speed that your ISP provides is based on an ideal, standard internet connection. VPN technology is highly complex and involves a large number of services and factors that can impact the overall speed you would see by using a VPN service.
To see what speeds your ISP is capable of providing to our VPN service, you can run a quick check on our Network page (feel free to try several different servers; you may find that some offer better speeds over your ISP's connection than others):
https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/network/
Once the VPN service is active on your device, under normal circumstances, you should expect to see a drop in speeds from the rate you saw when you ran the tests above; typically about a 30-60% drop. However, depending on local conditions and the ISPs your traffic traverses, you may see a more significant reduction, sometimes up to 70%.
- change servers
- change ports and protocols (tcp/udp)
- clear cache and cookies in the browser
- changed browsers to see if one is faster
- performed a clean uninstall/reinstall
(uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling a fresh copy)
- logged out of the application and reboot the device
(then logged back in to try and connect successfully)
I am sorry to hear about the long loading times when opening Outlook. Did you try the suggestions my colleague posted above? Changing ports and servers is one of the most common resolutions for connectivity issues. I recommend trying to connect to Office365 using several different server locations and trying each of our different port options on every server you try. The port that works best for one server may not be the best choice for another. This link will take you to our guide for changing ports - https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/kb/articles/i-have-trouble-connecting-or-the-connection-drops-frequently-changing-ports
It is also possible that Microsoft is blocking our DNS, this could cause slow loading times. The method for changing our DNS varies slightly depending on the device you are using. This link will take you to the guide for changing DNS in our Windows program - https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/guides/windows/windows/windows-changing-dns-servers-in-the-pia-app. There will be a drop down menu on the upper left side of the page where you can change the operating system, each of the listed OSs has a guide for changing DNS. I recommend trying Cloudflare in place of our addresses, their's are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
My problem is, sometimes when I fire up the machine in the morning and try to open any Office app, I get this:
Then when I restart my machine and try opening Office again, it works. I've never had it fail twice in a row, but I also am not sure exactly what is causing it. I would think if it was the UDP/TCP issue someone shared above, it would fail every time.
I've been thinking, perhaps, maybe it has something to do with the specific IP address Office might be log in with at a given time. After all, sometimes, depending on the IP address PIA assigns me, I might be blocked from sending email from the Gmail accounts I've linked to my Outlook, and have to temporarily disconnect to complete the send; other times I can send just fine. I wonder whether just starting Office in the morning might be related to the same thing.
I just thought of this possible link today; I haven't experimented with it. Has anyone else had this exact problem and figured out a fix for it?
