New Problem with Internet Speeds.
I've been using PIA with Utorrent for year, with no major problems. Currently any time I torrent, my internet speed plummets to nothing.
I launch PIA to Toronto, and check via Speedtest, I'm getting close to 100mbit.
I start to download a torrent, check speedtest and my speed is now 2mbit - 10mbit and the download is crazy slow.
I close Qtorrent (Or Utorrent) and speedtest shows my connection back to 100mbit.
I've reinstalled all software countless times and I'm getting the same results.
I have the default PIA settings (with Kill Switch Enabled)
If I set the torrent to TCP protocol only, my download is still crazy slow, but my speedtest is showing 50mbit. (I change protocol in PIA to TCP also)
If I set my torrent software to "both" or "UTP" my speedtest show massive slowdow.
If anyone can shine any insight on this situation, I would be grateful.

Unfortunately, we do not directly support the use of torrenting. This does not mean connecting is impossible, we are not able to assist. However - In comparison to FTP or P2P, torrents are unique in how the tech works. To download a torrent, you connect to a tracker, which contains a listing within its swarm of seeds and peers. Each seed and peer use a torrent application to feed the torrent to the swarm.
However, approximately 4 in 5 torrent clients block anonymous inbound connections and thus prevent you from connecting to them to feed from them. There is no way around this, and it's entirely dependent on what torrent clients seeds/peers happen to be used within any given tracker. As such, you'd rarely see more than maybe 20-40% of your normal speeds while connected to any anonymous connection in torrents, due to this fact.
This likely isn't the sole cause of speed or connectivity issues in torrents. This is a widespread issue with torrent programs. Many require port forwarding to be enabled, for them to work correctly (uTorrent, for example). Although we are unable to help you configure your torrent client, we can certainly tell you how to get the port information you need to configure it.
The only way to get a port assigned for use with your torrent client is to use our application to connect. You need to right-click on the Private Internet Access application in your system tray and choose Settings, then click Advanced. Put a checkmark in Port Forwarding, save it, and connect to one of the port forwarding-capable servers:
- CA Toronto
- CA Montreal
- CA Vancouver
- Czech Republic
- France
- Germany Berlin
- Germany Frankfurt
- Israel
- Romania
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland
While connected to one of these gateways, wait approximately 30-60 seconds, then right-click the icon in the system tray. At the top of the menu that populates, you will see the forwarded port in brackets (ex..[Port: 12345]) to the right of the IP address of the server you are connected to.
In addition to using port forwarding, you can also try changing the ports the VPN uses to connect. This can help with a variety of issues, including improving overall connection speed:

These options are not a one simple fix and may be periodically used to connect. PLEASE NOTE: our service is to allow the possibility of assisting in torrenting and port forwarding - not as a direct torrenting path. let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with! Thank you for your patience and for allowing us to serve you for your VPN needs. - PIA CS TEAM
