The PIA server you connect to will assign you an IP address. If you look at IPCONFIG before connection, you will see you local machine/network IP address. In my case it is 192.168.1.x (DHCP assigned).

When I connect to PIA, the Wifi connection remains as before, 192.168.1.x. However, there is a new assignment for Ethernet Adapter Ethernet 2 which is 10.x.x.x. That is the IP address for my local machine.

When you go to any website or check you IP address on the net, you will see the public IP address. It is assigned by PIA depending on which server you connect to. Today, my public IP address is in the 212 network. If I close the session and then come back on, the public IP address will change. This is the address that will be visible on the web. This public address will not be assigned to you, it is shared by many.
  • So I see a change when I connect on Ethernet 2 but my wireless card still shows my Comcast dns is that normal
  • It might be normal for your ISP. I would set the DNS to static PIA DNS addresses.

    Primary: 209.222.18.222
    Secondary: 209.222.18.218

Before you do this, when connected to PIA, in your browser go to https://ipleak.net/ and see what it discovers. You should only have 1 DNS address and that will by you public IP. If it is not, then go ahead and put in the static DNS addresses above.
  • It only finds one server but in the DNS suffix box in ipconfig it still shows the normal Comcast.net one
  • "DNS suffix box in ipconfig" - Where do you see this suffix box?
  • how would i post images
all i can say is that on my wireless lan adapter it says dns suffix at the top line and it shows the comcast.net one
  • it says "Connection-specific DNS Suffix"
  • and also every thing under my wireless lan is the same as it was before connecting the vpn.idk if this is normal the only changesi see are on ethernet adapter ethernet 2.
  • Check this link and see if there is something hard coded in your adapter.

    https://simpledns.com/kb/63/how-to-configure-dns-suffixes-on-windows-vista-2008

Don't worry about Vista/2008. I am using Win8.1 and the process is the same.

  • So what do I change these to the IP and DNS?

First write them down in case something goes wrong. Then remove the DNS addresses that are visible. Just leave it blank. After that, save and go about your daily business. It should not affect anything.

If you are having issues, put the addresses back in and open a service ticket. The pro's at the Service Desk will be able to help better.
  • The thing is theres no DNS adresses there
  • The only other thing I can think of is Group Policy DNS settings. That's it. I suggest you open a trouble ticket with PIA.

    https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/new-ticket

  • If you send in a ticket, please include a debug log. Just let us know the code it gives you. This will send your IPconfig to us.
  • I sent a ticket but I don’t necessarily know how to send the debug log could you run me through on that
