Google searches being blocked

It seems a lot of the time, my connection to Google is being blocked. Mainly the searches, which don't work at all. Youtube works fine, as does Google Drive, and I am signed in continuously. I can get search functionality back if I reconnect. Sometimes when I get to the bottom of a Google search page, it says my location is United Kingdom, even though I'm connected through the US East portal and WhatIsMyIPAddress confirms my location is Secaucus, NJ. Is PIA connecting me through a different server?

  • VPN Autokill isn't working properly... disable it and everything returned to normal for me
  • Same problem here. Exactly as you described. Furthermore - starting August 4th Google is blocking all my requests. I cannot access www.google.com and some of its services completely. I am using openvpn client.
  • Same here. I get an ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED message when I do a Google search with PIA.
  • When you do anything google, it keeps a cookie on your machine. Even if you use a PIA server anywhere in the world the cookie will ID you as being local of you geolocation, I would recommend deleting all you google related cookies before going on PIA.

My browser is setup to delete cookies when I open a session. I will close my browser before I sign on to PIA. After I get a new IP adgdress I will open my browser. All cookies are deleted (that I want deleted) and google will ID me as being in whatever server geolocation.

As an example, without PIA running my location at the bottom of the search page is correct. I close my browser, sign on to PIA, open my browser and my location is now Los Angeles California. That is the server I choose to use.

Try clearing out your cookies. Also, it would help if PIA knew where you were (not specific city, but country helps) and where your are trying to connect. But I think your cookies might be preventing you from connecting.

  • It's not because of autokill nor cookies, and neither assumption would make any sense at all. It appears it's because PIA is now using M247 Europe SRL portals much of the time, according to WhatIsMyIP. That's an ISP based in Romania. Hence Google deciding I'm in Europe based on the company location. I'm using a US portal so PIA should use a US ISP to avoid confusing Google.

Once the automated searches have stopped, you should be able to search normally on Google. The blocking might be related to your use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) browser plugin or program. ... When the abuse to Google's network stops, we automatically stop blocking the IP(s)/ISP(s) that were sending the bad traffic.Once the automated searches have stopped, you should be able to search normally on Google. If you don't see a reCAPTCHA, try these steps in order:
    1. Check for malware on your computer. ...
    2. Contact your network administrator. ...
    3. Reset your modem or router.

  • Doesn't matter. I'm checking my IP address after I reconnect now. It it says M247, I switch portals. Aside from the Google problem, the M247 connections are often dog slow. I was getting about 200kbps on US East, so I switched to US Chicago and I had full speed again. For the few seconds it took to ditch M247, it was worth it.
  • I'm sure of it now. Using exclusively US Chicago for the past week, I've had no problems whatsoever. That uses Total Server Solutions rather than M247. I will never connect through US East or US New York City again so long as PIA keeps using M247 for those. TSS appears to be well-regarded for providing VPN infrastructure.
