I'm running PIA on my iPhone and was checking my data usage. PIA seems to be using exactly half my mobile data. Is this a reflection of the data being funneled through the VPN, or am I double transmitting my data?
When you use the VPN, all applications will funnel the data through PIA, this will appear that PIA is using all of the data, but it is simply funneling the data to its destination. A VPN has very little overhead (additional data usage), amounting to a very small amount of each connection established to the VPN. This small amount of data usage is required to establish the connection when sending Handshake data which involves the exchange of private session keys to verify authenticity of the connection. The only additional data that would be sent would be ping requests to all of the PIA servers to determine the latencies of each of the PIA server. This information is used for the purpose of establishing which server to use when connecting to PIA automatically.
If you are seeing about twice the data used versus the data that PIA is showing as used, this would be merely coincidental.
