Complete noob trying to set up VPN

edited October 2019 in Windows VPN Setup

As the title suggests I have no clue what I am doing. I have tried to research online but every source uses a lot of language that I am unfamiliar with and asks me to complete actions that I don't know how to  /even begin to go about  doing. Can anyone offer me a very watered-down set of directions for setting up a VPN? Like ELI5 level. I really thought it would be as simple as going through the 'setting up vpn connection' action on Windows 7.

  • Once purchased, you should have received an email with your username, a temporary password, and installer links for our application. You should have also received an email regarding an order number for the purchase. If you did not, not to worry! We can resend these to you. Also, you can download out application here: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/download.

Once downloaded, you input the username and password into the log in field of the application. Here are some visuals:

    1. Log in with YOUR username and password. Please ensure that you are not copying and pasting your login information, as this can sometimes unintentionally pick up leading or trailing spaces. Please try typing making sure that the password is entered correctly as it is CaSe SenSitIve.

    2. Select LOG IN
    3. Click anywhere in the green boxed area

. You can select any server in the list that we offer but most users connect via 'AUTO'.

    5. Then you select the power button of the application to turn on or off the VPN.

    6. When enabled, you should see a green icon in your task bar or go here:https://www.privateinternetaccess.com and see if the banner up top is green or red. Green is connected, secure while red is disconnected/not secure. After being connected, you simply use the internet as you normally would while being protected.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with! Thank you for your patience and for allowing us to serve you for your VPN needs.

  • Here are the few steps to setup VPN connection on Windows 7 :
    1. Open Start type Network and Sharing Center and press Enter.
    2. Under Change your networking settings, click on the link Set up a new connection or network.
    3. The Set Up a Connection or Network wizard will now open, select Connect to a workplace and click Next.
    4. Now choose how you want to connect, in this case, we are going to select — which will be in most cases — Use my Internet connection (VPN) option.
    5. Next, there is some information you need to enter and some options that you need to configure:
    (a) Internet Address: This is the IP address or the domain name for the VPN server, you can get this information from your network administrator.
    (b) Description Name: This is the name of the connection, it can be anything you want, but try to use something descriptive.
    6. Depending on the network you are trying to connect to, you will be fine by just configuring the first two options. Just note that the option Allow other people to use this connection can be a security risk as it allows anyone who accesses your computer to use the connection.
    7. Type your VPN account credentials and click the Create button. If you are one of those users that forget passwords, check the option Remember this password, but remember that this could be also a security risk because anyone using your computer logged in with your user account can connect to the VPN.
    8. Lastly, test the Windows 7 VPN client connection by clicking Connect now or you can do it later by clicking the Close button.
