Schwab blocks PIA - two workarounds

edited November 2019 in General VPN Support
Many people here and on other sites have complained about Schwab blocking PIA. Schwab’s front line tech support guy I spoke to at Schwab seemed very knowledgable. He says it’s because PIA IP addresses have been associated with bad guys usage. He says there’s no way to question this further with their security division, no way to elevate to them.

I travel a lot internationally and in the US. No way I want to go without VPN. When this year’s subcription comes up for renewal, I may look elsewhere for a VPN provider. I don’t care about the logging issue. There are others who log, but say they only keep their logs X days.

Meanwhile, I have two workarounds:

1. I discovered that Schwab only blocks logons. After that, it’s open. So I shut down my email program and then disconnect PIA. I log on to Schwab. Once I’m logged in, I reconnect PIA and then restart my email program. Someone elsewhere posted a script to do this, but I find it’s easy enough from the Taskbar

2. Schwab doesn’t block all PIA nodes. I haven’t found any in the US I can use. Nor in France. But it seems that at least a few Canada PIA nodes are not currently blocked. It does slow me down a bit, but that’s the tradeoff. Luckily, I  only need to do this infrequently for Schwab.

  • That's an industry wide problem of VPN use and because a few bad apples use VPNs to carry out their nefarious deeds, it makes it harder on the rest of us. Thank you so much for sharing your advice here.
