VPN turned off - Utorrent running through proxy

edited August 2014 in Off-topic Discussion
Searched but could not find an answer, and I am hoping someone can help me with one.

If I disconnect my vpn in the taskbar icon so my computer is using my normal connection but I set up utorrent to run through the socks5 proxy am I still protected in utorrent.

My reason is I play World of Warcraft and they ban accounts that use a VPN so I would like to run my utorrent downloads through the vpn but not my WoW connection so I dont get banned and have both going at the same time. Play the game while utorrent downloads.

Am I doing it correctly?

Thanks in advance

  • Playing a game while downloading in a torrent client will totally trash your ping time...

But yes, the proxy will help. It provides no encryption however, so anyone looking at the packets can see what it is. You should force encryption in your torrent client. (Not enable, Force.)
  • Awesome, thank you for the quick reply!

I have Protocol Encryption as Forced under preferences. Does that encrypt my connection or do I need to have the vpn turned on as well.

Luckily WoW doesn't seem to cause many issues when I torrent but I cant say the same for other games.

    Thanks!
  • With protocol encryption forced, all traffic to and from your torrent client will be encrypted. The only remaining danger is if one or more of the peers in the torrent are just collecting data to turn over for analysis. But there are bigger fish out there, and no-one is going to pick through your packets to figure out a way to narrow who you are past the proxy. (And PIA will give them nothing besides a big middle finger if they demand it.)

So you should be safe unless someone wants you bad enough to put a whole server farm to work for years to break the encryption of your packets.
  • Awesome! That is exactly the info I was looking for! I appreciate you explaining it for me, was confused!

Your a wealth of knowledge, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I have learned a ton just by searching these forums and reading your posts.

    Thanks again
  • You are very welcome. Just ask if you have any further questions.

I too am looking into doing this.

I'm not too well versed with this, but will running Utorrent through the Socks5 proxy and forcing the encryption without running the PIA client stop my ISP from hassling me?
  • No idea. How are they hassling you?
Generally, it's better to torrent with an active VPN connection. Unless you too have reason to turn it off but can't also stop torrenting at those times, I'd advise to torrent through the VPN.

Sorry, this might be a stupid question, but i am also quite new to this.
I read some tutorials online on how to configure utorrent to use the PIA proxy.
Do I need to do this or is it unnecessary if i already have the pia vpn client running and connected?
Is there a benefit in doing both?

    Thanks in advance, everyone!

There may be a benefit to using both, although it is certainly not necessary. If you use both and the VPN for some reason is disconnected, you would still be protected by the proxy, and vice versa.

You can significantly mitigate this risk by enabling the kill switch in
the PIA client and ticking "Disable Connections Unsupported by the
    Proyx" in utorrent.
  • Thank you very much for the fast and clear response :) I'll leave them both on for now.
