Mac Connectivity Problem

edited August 2014 in General Privacy Discussion Posts: 1
Hello there,

Download the PIA app for my Mac (10.9) and can't connect. Everytime I open the program and attempt to connect I get a popup that says "networksetup is trying to modify the system network configuration. Type your password to allow this."

After I enter my password and select 'Modify Configuration' the popup keeps coming back and I can't connect. Any ideas for troubleshooting?

I'm having the same problem. Any one find a resolution?
  • When Network Setup continually prompts; this points to one thing, an issue with Permissions.

Sometimes this can be an issue with Disk permissions, or some type of further issue in your user account.

First, please try repairing your disk permissions:

    1. Go to Applications/Utilities
    2. Open Disk Utility
    3. Click Macintosh HD
    4. Click on Verify Disk Permissions
    5. Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    6. Power off your computer, wait five minutes, and turn the computer back on.

After this, please delete the existing copy of the installer you have downloaded, then re-download a fresh copy from our website ( https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/ ), and give the install another try.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, this could be an issue with your KeyChain (The part of OS X that manages passwords, and inherent permissions for system access. There is information and a resolution here:

If the issues still persist, please try creating a new Admin account, and testing the Application from there.

El Capitan changed the way you do disk permissions. I also went to Utilities and ran first aid before I uninstalled PIA and then I reinstalled PIA and it worked fine.

  • Hi All,

Well I am stumped!  I have tried everything in StephenA post.  I have repaired permissions from recovery mode.  I have uninstalled shutdown and reinstalled.  I have deleted my keychains from ~/LibraryKeychain and /Library/Keychain but still the problem persists. I didn't touch any of the keychain files in /var/db/SystemKey.

I was on OSX 10.11 with the problem.  I just tried upgrading to 10.11.2 but still same issue.  I have tried installing PIA on two other macs which run Yosemite still and they have no problems but on my main desktop running El Capitan it just wont work.  Any more ideas?  Please?  This is driving me crazy.

    Problem finally solved !

    Run the steps below

    1. Go to Applications/Utilities
    2. Open Disk Utility
    3. Click Macintosh HD
    4. Click on First Aid

After First Aid is completed,  enter your password as prompted in the popup: "networksetup is trying to modify the system network configuration. Type your password to allow this."

I've found a solution that works perfectly--an applescript to open PIA as an admin on system startup. Simply make the script (as below) in script editor, save as an application, hide it somewhere (it has your PW in plain text in the script), and add it to your login items in System Preferences -> Users.  Make sure you turn OFF PIA's "start program on login" (the script will launch it now, you just make the script start on login)

PIA apparently works by opening a script on your main drive (/Applications/) which opens a script in your user folder (~/.pia_manager/) when then opens a ... well I donno but anyways if you launch script #1 in admin mode all works fine. Alternatively you can remove the part about the password and it'll work--just ask for your PW once.

    do shell script "/Applications/Private\\ Internet\\ Access.app/Contents/MacOS/launch_pia.sh > /dev/null 2>&1 &" password "[YOUR PASSWORD HERE]" with administrator privileges
