4G LTE Keeps Dropping On Verizon When Using PIA App

edited October 2014 in Off-topic Discussion
I have been having several issues connecting to my VPN through the PIA app while using cellular data (4G LTE).  The connection will start and within seconds, the data connection drops and the PIA apps tries to reconnect.  I am using a Samsung Galaxy S4.  Any suggestions you can provide would be great!  I really don't want to cancel my subscription to PIA, but I may if I can't get a solution.  Thank you!

  • It's not PIAs fault, and it will apparently happen with the OpenVPN client as well. It seems mostly limited to Verizon, and it seems to be limited to a few phones, including the Galaxy S4 and the S5. I have the S5 and experience exactly the same thing that you do. Apparently, it will work okay with a PPTP VPN connection, but I haven't personally tried it since I really only need the VPN when connected over my work's Wi-Fi connection.

That said, I know there is a newer firmware for the S5, so it's possible it could have been fixed; not sure if there's a newer firmware for the S4. At any rate, I haven't tried it yet since I'm rooted, and therefore, not a simple upgrade.
  • Thank you for your reply!
  • Here's a thread on VZW's forum regarding this issue. I've been keeping up with it to see if there is any sort of resolution, but nothing yet.

  • i have Samsung s5 and have same problem!

here's what PIA's helpdesk told me:

    Hi,

Thanks for contacting us. Is your 4g through Verizon? It seems that
Verizon has recently made a change to the IP addresses it provides its
users. The IP addresses are now NAT restricted, which prevents VPNs from
    being able to properly connect.

In order to resolve this, you need to contact Verizon, and ask them to
provide you with a NAT unrestricted IP address. This will allow the VPN
to connect and remain connected again.

can anyone decipher that for me and what i can do to fix this?
  • I have a galaxy S5 running Android 4.4.  I too am having this issue. Supposedly the way to fix it is to goto http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ download Android 5.0 and flash it to your phone. I'm just not sure I'm that committed to needing to use  VPN over 4g that I want to reflash my phone.
