Internet drops when I try to download torrents.

Hey all, I have a problem. I'm using uTorrent 2.2.1 (I use an old version because I don't want all the adware and other crap) and whenever I try to download torrents my internet drops like a stone shortly after starting the downloads.

Here's my setup

I have a router (WRT54G) being fed from my ISP's cable modem and wired connections to my laptop which is what I'm downloading on and my main PC. I have the torrents set to download to a hard drive on my PC through Windows networking. I checked the speed of file transferring between the Laptop and the PC and it's way, WAY above the download rate I get on bittorrent so it's not a bottlenecking or slow transfer issue.

My downloading laptop uses Private Internet Access to connect and I have uTorrent set up to only connect through the SOCKS5 proxy server.

I thought maybe it was an MTU issue so I followed this guide https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/comment/38450/#Comment_38450

But unfortunately that didn't help either.

My brother downloads torrents using the same VPN and he has no problems, he doesn't use my router though he connects directly to our cable modem. So it could be my router, and I need to replace it anyway but I'd like to be sure.

Any assistance that could be offered would be greatly appreciated. If you need any additional info or settings or anything please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you very kindly for your time.

  • You are probably choking out your router. The WRT54G is a very poor quality router. For every global connection your router has to write in the IP table and open a new connection. If you have 500 global connections, that pretty much like 500 web pages needing to be opened and loaded all at once. Cut down your global # or buy a much better router.
Next stop using uTorrent. UseqBittorrent instead. Go to the Settings/Advanced/Network Interface and bind it to your TAP adapter (can be PIA, en1, en2, tun1, tun2, etc.).
Next find a goof open open listening port. May have to experiment. Start at 8999 and go up a few thousand till you get a good speed.
  • Ah yup. After your post I just tried connecting via our cable modem's wifi (so bypassing the router) and had none of these problems.

New router it is, thanks for the help!
