I added the files hosted by Mega since Dropbox seems to require people to login to download anything now.

*Edit* Dropbox no longer has the files. Mega still does however.
  • And here a link for the file on billion upload for those who can't get it until omni gives the more convenient link on dropbox.
Lol. Thanks. I am running out of space on my Dropbox account. I will purge what I can, and I doubt it will begin to matter for at least several months more at this rate.

Dear lord. I had no idea I would get another 500 MB of space per referral. Good catch. :)

*Edit* Removed the referral link. I have 2.1GB of free space to use for the future. Thanks again everyone.

*Edit* Upon looking at what Dropbox wants, they are reminding me of Google. They want private information. They seek it by giving you the benefits of Internet accessible storage, but it may be a bad idea to join if you value your privacy. Here is a few screenshots to show why I think this. (Posting them via Dropbox, ironically.)

  • Hindsight is 20/20. So please disregard the referral link above unless you were going to sign up for Dropbox anyway, and do *NOT* give them any more information than you want. I can cull another gigabyte of space from my Dropbox account by just moving my drivers from the Dropbox folder to a USB flash drive that I never use. That will leave plenty of space for future versions of the PIA Client.

Back on that subject, I now have three versions of the PIA Linux client, and only the latest version of the OSX client. Are there any more I should be hosting? (Two of the three versions of the PIA Linux Client I have are without version numbers. So I have one with the default name, and the other with the prefix Old added since it was an earlier version.)
  • I assume i gave you the space now. You don't really need to register with real info or use it actually. Virtualbox is the magic word ;)
If you can check and tell me if it worked.

Indeed it must be. Thank you very much. I have enough for years more of all three OSes for the PIA Client and plenty more.

And it seems I must have done something similar three years back, since I appear to have referred myself... (I do not recall it, but the evidence is there for all to see.)

*Edit* I will remove the referral link above. It is almost impossible to imagine needing more space than this for the few things I do with it. Thanks again everyone.

Well, I was going to create an account so you could get some more storage, but I wasn't fast enough. I might still have the link in my browser history. >:) I have an old Dropbox account which I have never used, but I don't mind creating another one (which I'll probably never use).

The secret to using Dropbox for anything personal is to 1) give them bogus info and 2) encrypt everything BEFORE you ever upload it there. And of course use PIA whenever you login.

ETA: Nope, I cleared my history the last time I changed gateways. @OmniNegro - If you ever decide you need more storage just PM me the referral link.

And back on topic, v46 still holding below 7MB. :D Big THX to the dev team!

On that note, here is another thing people should have to use this or any other service for private storage.
TrueCrypt 7.1a. (All versions of 7.1a in one zip archive. 23.3MB)
  • lol. So we have someone officially working at PIA who goes by the username KYJelly. lol. That's hilarious.

    I wonder what s/he is into. :-P
  • OmniNegro , can you post a link to where all the changelogs are kept? You're usually pretty good about keeping all that info for us. :-)

I'm still using .v38. I'd like to see all the changes that's taken place since .v38.

    Thanks!
  • v38 had this:

    Dear Private Internet Access customers,

    On June 5th 2014,
the OpenSSL project has released a security advisory[1] with multiple
fixes of vulnerabilities found in OpenSSL and fixed in the latest
    version.

    All
of our servers running OpenSSL have been updated. The OSX client has
also been updated. We're working on updating our windows client and it
will be updated as soon as possible.

    Keep
in mind that even if you're running an older client, your data is safe
since both server and client need to be vulnerable in order for
    CVE-2014-0224 to be exploitable.

Thank you again for entrusting us with your business. Be aware that we take your privacy and security as our utmost priority.

    v39 had this:

    - fixes the connection issue with the Kill Switch where the app would sometimes take longer to connect after disconnecting.

    v40 had this:

    - Update OpenSSL to latest version (openssl-1.0.1i)

    v41 had this:

    - Fixes an issue on Windows 8.1 where the kill switch would sometimes not trigger on interfaces with IPv6 configured

    v42 had this:

    - Fix issue when client could send 'server check' requests to localhost.

    v43 had this:

    - To provide us information about the connected state of OpenVPN on debug logs sent to support.

    v44 had this:

    - Add a link on the sign in page that enables user to reset password.
    - Add a 'Connect Auto' to the menu of regions
    - Show region and IP in the tooltip after connected

    v45 had this:

    - Fixes issue with port forwarding

    v46 had this:

    - Fixes issue memory leak issue

These are all in the changelogs subforum under the respective version. Easy to find if you want to look.
  • OmniNegro, thank you very much for that very helpful changelog post. I've caught up on all the fixes/changes.

Have you upgraded to the latest version? Would you recommend others update to the latest?

I see no reason not to update. It is effectively version 45 that fixes the port forward issue, but without the memory leak some reported. And yes, I have updated already.

In order, the most important of those were versions 38, 40, 45, and the current 46. 38 and 40 were OpenSSL updates. And 44 added "auto" as a region to select when connecting.

So if you do not need port forwarding, and want to use an old version, I suggest 40 as the oldest to use. I have them all in my Dropbox VPN folder.

However, if you use a Mac or Linux I frankly have no idea what is best. I finally got around to retaining the current Mac version, and there is finally a version number to use for the Linux version, so the future looks bright for all platforms.

  • For Mac, v45 introduced the constant drive writes that Windows client had, so was using v43 until the v46 beta. v46 seems to be better in this respect. I don't use portforwarding much unless seeding distros. I am still having problems with PIA disconnecting when I try torrenting.
  • @KYJelly is still running two pia_tray.exe processes. Not much of a hassle as can just kill one or just leave both running doesn't seem to cause problem but thought I'd let you know.
  • I'm on the WinTel platform. Will upgrade to v.46. Thanks!

There are new forks now which are being actively worked one. See VeraCrypt https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/ or CipherShed  https://ciphershed.org/

To date no one has found any major security flaws in TrueCryp, though I agree that the death was a bit suspicious. At this point I can't understand why the develpoers don't issue a statement explaining why they quit. and more importantly, whether there are any security issues that they do know about. The general opinion is that TrueCrypt is still safe to use, but the truth is that nobody really knows. I'm not sure what happened with the audit. Statements were made that it would continue to completion, but I haven't heard of anything more being released.

I'm liking what I see happening with VeraCrypt. The developer isn't some nameless person who's afraid to identify himself, and he has already made corrections to the parts of the TrueCrypt code which had been reported as problematic. I'm thinking of using it myself.
  • Thanks Omni for the summary of changelogs!!! :-)

Can anyone comment on the working order of Kill Switch in this version?
  • edited November 2014
Before TrueCrypt came around, the only good file encryption utilities were commercial. The TC devs are still to this day hiding. And do not want to be known for their work. (Everyone remembers what happened to poor Zimmerman when he released PGP back ages ago?)

The audit is still ongoing, but has not yet found anything amiss worthy of reporting. Mostly they just bitch about mixing unsigned and signed integers.

Here is the original thread were we discussed this in detail. And thanks Peter_Brown for the referral to VeraCrypt. I will check it out.

*Edit* And in the rare case where someone does not know what happened to poor Phil Zimmerman, here is the Wikipedia link to it.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy#Criminal_investigation
  • Thank you, @ElBandito.  I have alerted our dev team in regards to this.
  • I still use TC but don't like that it doesn't auto-dismount drives on sleep. I had been wondering about alternatives so thanks for the links.
  • TrueCrypt is solid as. NSA pressured them to make it read only for v7.2 and there is no reason found not to continue to use v7.1a
  • What is not shown in the log is something else very beneficial - the vpn doesn't get disconnected anymore when the HDD is in constant use for long periods of time.

All other editions including .45, if I copied a large file directory with many large files inside the vpn will disconnect in the middle of things.

This edition I am currently testing by copying 3 large file directories on same HDD and downloading and web surfing at same time and so far no disconnects!  I didn't even change the system priority for openvpn.exe and it's already fine!

***Kudos to the PIA and the programming team for finally fixing this very irritating issue.

Not important now, but did you make an empty file called "nolog" (No extension on the file either.) in the PIA_Manager directory to see if it was trying to log itself into oblivion?
  • yes I had nolog file for every revision I tried so far.  Only .46 no longer disconnects.
  • .46 is still crashing and creating the 2nd instance of pia_tray.exe   :(
    Win7 x64

It doesn't affect the operation of the client, but it does prevent the client from disconnecting or exiting - you have to kill the task (which is an issue if you have Kill Switch engaged - pun intended ;) )
