  • Yes, thank you from me too!
  • Okay, I'm 58 and I need a bit of help with this. I have had PIA for 2 days. I got it because I don't care to get threatening letters from my ISP or lawyers.
I "think" I have uTorrent set up correctly going by the first few post with the pictures and everything (very helpful).
How do I know I've done everything I should with PIA? I mean, is there a way to test it and see if I've really got a different IP? Oh dear...what I mean is, I do a test on my IP and it always gives one far away from where I actually live. Good thing.
Now, does this mean my browsing cannot be traced back to me? I don't want to be tracked!
In the settings PIA asks if I want to start it at logon. Which logon? My Windows 7 logon? The PIA logon?
Thank you everyone who has contributed to this thread as it has helped me a ton!

  • Okay, so no help here so far. Hmmmm.

This is a user to user help forum. I for one do not know enough to help you with this problem, but others may have a good idea what to do. Be patient. They will get around to it when they are not busy leeching. (PIA does not have staff checking and contributing to the forums much. So do not expect a reply from them.)
  • Hi,

im new to PIA and uTorrent and the Proxy works so far, but most of the Torrents i cant download. Maybe this is a Rookiequestion: For most of the Torrents it shows that all Trackers are deactivated and it searches for Peers, but nothing happens.

I dont really need complete privacy, just enough to not get caught by the Copyright lawyers...thx!! :)

The little icon in the lower right hand corner of UTorrent is orange and says No Incoming Connections.
Does that mean if you aren't downloading anything there will be No Incoming Connections?
    Thanks
  • Have you enabled and setup port forwarding? That would help get your connections sorted.
  • I don't know how to set up port forwarding. sorry. Thats why I'm here...to get help. Thank you.
  • please use µTorrent Community Forums if your question is left unanswered on this thread.

I tried that. They only hiss at you to come back here. Mean is what they are.

    µTorrent Settings:

Port used for incoming connectons - 1080 (Same a proxy server port). I could not get proper access on private sites until I did this. Uploads and downloads are working just fine. µTorrent may complain about this setting, just ignore it.

Options, Preferences, BitTorrent, Encryption - Outgoing:  FORCED.  Allow incoming legacy connecctions UNCHECKED.

I'm trying your settings. Thank you.

I use the proxy and the vpn from these fine folks, both at the same time. I know they have a VPN Kill Switch Option built into the VPN settings, but I just feel safer keepiing µTorrent using the Proxy also.  Hope this helps some of you.

Okay, I just finished chatting with someone from PIA.
    I will post our conversation:
Janice: "How do I fix PIA so it will port forward for uTorrent?

Hello janice, my name is Jonathan R.
Many users find they need to enable port forwarding in order to get the best speeds
and connectivity with torrent clients. In order to enable port forwarding in our client, enter the Settings area for our client, and click the Advanced button.
Enable port forwarding and select one of the following gateways:
    Netherlands
    Switzerland
    CA North York
    CA Toronto
    Romania
    Sweden
    France
    Germany
After enabling port forwarding and re-connecting to one of the above gateways, please hover your mouse over the System Tray or Menu Bar icon for our client to reveal the tool-tip which will display the port number. You can then enter this port into your software, like uTorrent or another torrent client."
    **************
    Having said that...
    janice
do i need to use a proxy with uTorrent? Or

    is PIA enough?

Hello janice, my name is Jonathan R. The

    VPN application should be enough.

    janice
well, why is everybody in a hype to get the proxy going and what do you mean "should be?"

    Jonathan R
Sorry, I should have said "IS enough".
Sorry for the unclear wording. Many clients tend to be under the impression that using the VPN and the Proxy at the same time provides an extra layer of security. This is
    not the case.
In fact sometimes using both at the same time can cause connection conflicts.
I am not sure what the source of this misconception is. I know that a lot of clients get referred to us by lifehacker.com and they seem to suggest people should use both.

    END of chat
    *************************
    I also found this:

"Port forwarding allows you to connect to more peers in the torrent swarm, which allows you to download/upload faster.
When you enable port forwarding in the PIA client (click advanced to see it in the client
settings) you can hover over the icon in the notification area by your clock and it will
show you a port number. Then you put that port number into your torrent client.
Also when you're running the PIA client you don't need to set up a proxy in the torrent client since the PIA client is tunneling you through a gateway which is basically a proxy + encryption.

The one downside you may encounter is that some forums or websites may block you since they see you with an IP from the VPN now which someone probably abused and got
banned. If you encounter that just stop your torrenting and disconnect from PIA to do what you need on those sites."
    *************************
I also found a Kill Switch for PIA. I downloaded it but haven't tried it yet.

  • PIA has a kill switch in it's control panel under the advanced settings, why would you need to download a separate one?

Also thank you for posting that chat log, I figured PIA + a kill switch would be enough protection when torrenting, good to know since I wasn't able to get my proxy to connect to seeders.

Well, I recommended PIA to someone and they said it didn't have a KLL Switch just for uTorrent so I found a Kill Switch for just uTorrent. If I'm understanding this correctly PIA's Kill Switch kills the internet and everything.
Yeah, I couldn't get the proxy to work right either.
  • program I'm using is utorrent. I VPN and proxy same time. I use a
torrent CheckMyTorrentIP to check. sometime it say the ip is proxy ip,
which is expected. sometime it say ip is 192.168.XXX.XXX. Why doing
    this? Is leaking real ip?

192.168.x.x is a range of addresses reserved for use on local networks.  It does not identify you on the internet in any way.  It is not your public IP.

It is generally considered unnecessary/redundent to use VPN and proxy.  If you are worried about VPN dropping then I believe the kill switch is the recommended solution.

Proxy is useful because it can be much simpler to use then VPN and many users don't need the tunnel encryption provided by VPN (eg. because their ISP is not eavesdropping on them).
  • Hey everyone,

Had a question which I thought was well suited for this thread, after watching some packet information from Wireshark:

I had a handful of connections on the 109.201.154.xxx subnet transferring a heavy amount of information to my desktop; after a quick IP lookup I confirmed they were from the nl-proxy for PIA, it made sense since I was torrenting. What doesn't make sense, however, is that after I closed my torrenting application, one of the IP addresses continues to send information (not much, just a couple 100 bytes every polling interval, but it's been consistent for the past 20 minutes or so since closing out my torrent application) - 109.201.154.221. I dont use the VPN services, and I've only setup the proxy in uTorrent. Anyone have any idea what/why this is?
  • Did you stop the torrent before closing the torrent client?

I found PIA on a Lifehacker article and after reading up and much like you here I decided it was the best way to go.  I also use a Mac with Yosemite and uTorrent which at the moment I may go with Transmission as my torrent app.

I was configuring uTorrent and following the directions in this thread about Port Forwarding, and yet I must be doing something wrong since its just not connecting.

As one of the posts in here suggested I did go back to the OP and re-read it many times yet its for Windows and as Mac users know Windows and Mac based apps are not the same in terms of configuring settings.

So does anyone have any screenshots for the Mac with uTorrent so I can figure out where my settings are incorrect.

    Thanks.
  • Where do I get the username and password?
  • Is there anyway to get the picture of how everything is supposed to be setup re-uploaded?

    Thank you.
  • The image in this thread are not loading. Can anyone tell me which options to check/uncheck for uTorrent on windows proxy settings?

    Thanks.

+1 Jay...people keep asking and nobody helps.  If someone could be so kind and post a pic or type out the options that should be checked or unchecked in the image that no longer appears on the first page of this thread? In RED below is the information we need.
