VPN Setup for Fast & Safe d/loading via uTorrent

Hi Y’all,

I am struggling to get my head around how to setup up my VPN & uTorrent, so I can download at max speeds and safeguard my online identity.  

Tech / Software,
_Macbook Air w/ OS X Yosemite
_uTorrent v1.8.6 (current)
_Netgear N600 Dual Band Modem Router
_Running PIA VPN Client Interface v4.6 (current)
  Region: Auto, Connection Type: tcp, Remote Port: 443

When uTorrent & PIA VPN Client Interface are running simultaneously my download speed drops from 1MB+ p/s to 200-230kb p/s. What could be causing the speed to drop? What settings and on what device do I need to change?

AND

What is the best way to setup uTorrent’s and/or PIA VPN Client Interface settings to ensure online privacy while torrenting?

a) Port Forwarding via PIA VPN Client Interface
In PIA VPN Interface, Tick Port Forwarding box, change region to Canada and enter Port number (found upon hovering mouse over PIA VPN menu car icon) into uTorrent

b) Setup a proxy, similiar to this post,

c) Other???

1) Regarding your VPN client setup, can you use UDP?  TCP is often slower than UDP.

2) In utorrent make sure to disable UPNP and NAT PMP and bandwidth management (uTP).   Enable DHT and Peer Exchange

3) You're doing the port forwarding correctly.  No need to mess with the proxy if you're using VPN.

Hi,

1) Have changed, do I leave Remote Port on auto?

2) Done

3) Do I have to always select CA Toronto for the region or should I leave it on auto?

Thanks very much for your help, it is hard to decipher what is best for your own setup, with so many options.

I changed all settings as suggested, but when I entered the new port (forwarding) number into Incoming TCP within utorrent, I found the speed of downloads dropped to 0.2kb p/s.

I did see a PIA forum post stating CA Toronto was experiencing issues, so changed to Switzerland. This did not improve speeds either. The speed only increased once I randomised the port number again in utorrent.

use that page to make sure the port PIA gives you is open and connectible to your torrent client.

2- Some mention to allow torrents but only few servers. But you wont find any such issue here with PIA.
