Web Page Blocked due to Security Policy Violation

edited December 2014 in Feedback
So, newbie here and I have a question. Running PIA on a Mac in the office and I get the following msg when trying to access a particular site:
*****************************************************************************
Web Page Blocked due to Security Policy Violation

The requested resource has been blocked as an identified risk to your client and the XXXXXX corporate network.
If you have any questions regarding the specific URL, the listed category or edge security policy, please contact:
EDGESUPPORT

URL: www.getsync.com/
Category: Peer-to-peer File Sharing

So my question is, doesn't PIA offer DNS service? I assume that the site in question is blocked because of a DNS request my client did. Or did I miss something in the client configuration (which I doubt)?

Comments

  • I now realize how stupid the above question is. Apologies :)
  • yeah, likely blocked by firewall on your computer.

well, the problem turns-out to be around DNS. I was not changing the DNS settings to something more "open" such as 8.8.8.8. So my system is still using the default DNS while using VPN. And this is where the blocking policies come in action.

But as a side note, with 8.8.8.8 as a DNS the traffic is totally blocked. IT is doing something more sophisticated that blocks traffic which doesn't use the default DNS
  • are you sure you've got a tunnel created properly?  if everything is going through a proper tunnel then your DNS requests should not be getting captured by your IT department, especially if you are using 8.8.8.8

The instructions are not so complex (link and link) so the chances of messing this up is minimal. but even a simple ping or nslookup had problems completing against 8.8.8.8
