Mac menu bar icons

Those icons really need to be changed. I shouldn't have to stare at an icon and wonder whether it's gray or black. What's wrong with having a yellow "connecting" icon? It's not like anyone would be seeing it for more than a few seconds assuming the software was working properly. Stop being a slave to fads. This monochrome interface fad will run its course. At the very least, stop being lazy and create status icons with slightly different shapes instead of forcing people to discern status by color only.

  • I find it difficult to tell the grey "connecting" from black "connected" icon too. I'd prefer monochrome though, with different shape, or animated like the OSX L2TP/PPTP icon, than a different colour like Windows users have (red/green/bright green).

Requests of this nature have been passed along to our developers, and are currently under review / consideration.

I will mention, that hovering your mouse over the MenuBar icon will display a Tooltip status message that indicates the current connection status, either Disconnected, Connecting, or Connected.

  • I know about that, but it's an extra step that's unnecessary and hides information, which is an unfortunate trend that human interface specialists lament. Clarity suffers because programmers put style over substance. Take a lesson from Skype, among other programs. Their status icons each have a distinctive look despite having the same outline. There's no confusion whatsoever and status is clear at a glance.

  • I strongly agree that a grey and a black icon are bad for an app like PIA - I want immediate visual feedback.  Other menu bar apps (e.g. one monitoring the state of my disks) give you the choice of whether to have coloured or black/grey/white icons. PIA tray could do that too.

Rather than waiting for PIA, I have copied/renamed icons in ~/.pia_manager/pia_tray.app/Contents/Resources

I now get a red icon when disconnected.

If you do this, make sure you keep a clean copy of pia_tray.app in case you mess up.
