I would like to see something written out IN PLAIN LANGUAGE for us scared little rabbits.

Hello everyone,

Imagine my surprise last November when I received a letter from my ISP MediaCom warning me that I downloaded an illegal something that was copyrighted.

Scared the ever living hell out of me almost to the point where I was ready to give up the internet altogether but what infuriated me is to this day I have no idea what I downloaded or from where.  Until very recently (December shortly after purchasing PIA) I didn't even know what a Torrent was and the only thing I ever downloaded was something from YouTube.

The notice I got from MediaCom Gestapo Headquarters was full of threats and innuendo and I had visions of them coming after me for million$ when I still don't have an idea what went on.

I'm 71 years old and while we are financially well set in retirement but the last thing we need in our lives is a gang of viperous lawyers out to make an example of a retired couple living on social security.  I hate MiediaCom for shattering our security for something I didn't even know I did and I still don't know!  Damn them all to hell!

Well, I heard of VPN's before and kind of knew how they worked but I never thought I would need one.  Boy, was I ever wrong on that! Just the idea they would track me is upsetting, I felt like a rape victim.

I purchased PIA last month after doing a fair bit of research on who
provided the best service.  Turned out PIA was the best out there
according to many (keep it up guys) and one of the lower priced plans
but price was the last thing I was looking for.  So I got PIA and found it easy to install.  Oh, and the online help has always been beyond super, always available and always helpful.  Thanks guys.

PIA appears to be working well, I go to DNS Leak Test and it shows me a thousand miles away.  The Android figure is a bright green color and with that I am feeling better.

If PIA does what they claim, and I have no reason to believe they don't, then I will never again get on any internet connection without it.  You know what?  I detest the idea MediiaCom knows I visit Drudge Report and what I read and write in a retirement forum I use.  The very idea brings me to near vomit stage and I have nothing to hide.

The bastards!

So do me a favor and calm me down a bit by answering some rather simple questions

When I am connected what is it that MediaCom can see me doing?  Can they tell when I am downloading something?  Yep, thanks to MediaCom Gestapo I learned what Torrentz are and I downloaded some movies for the grandkids but I did it at a restaurant internet access.  I am still to afraid to use my home access.

Am I safe?  How safe am I?

I think I know the answers I just need to hear it in plain language.

Thank you all for putting up with my rant but honestly, I still don't know what I did!

  • your ISP can see that you have an openvpn connection to a PIA server but because the payload is encrypted they cannot see what is flowing through that connection.

If you have wifi at your house, make sure that it has a strong password protecting it using WPA2 type encryption.  If not, it could be that a neighbor stole your wifi to download something and you got accused of doing it.
  • It is also possible that this was an entirely fictional claim. You would likely be surprised how often people try to "settle" with the jackasses that claim they stole something even when there is exactly zero evidence of any wrongdoing.

In most cases, I would advise completely ignoring them. If they are serious, you will get your day in court, and they will lose their asses in legal fees if they cannot prove you did anything wrong. But do *NOT* go to court without an attorney. If you think you are sick of this crap now, that would absolutely kill you.

Literally 99% of the time, if you did nothing wrong and got one of those notices, then it was just to see if you will try to hand over money. Once you try negotiating with them, they have you in an indefensible position and will constantly remind you that you must be guilty because you tried to negotiate. A good attorney can easily refute this. You cannot. (No offense. But this is true. It does not matter who you are, you absolutely will be trodden into dust if you try negotiating with these scumbags without an attorney.)
  • OmniNegro,

They weren't asking for money but they did want me to respond to their allegations and I am not that much of an idiot.  Once I respond "I didn't mean to do it" I'm dead meat in their eyes and for that reason I will have my attorney respond for me.

MediaCom, being the police unit they are, brings to mind the "Don't talk to Police" youtube video.

Anyway, it's been over two months now so maybe that is the end of it. MediaCom Gestapo Headquarters, my hatred towards MediaCom burns brighter than the sun, was warning me if it happened again they would terminate my service which tells me that is the end of it.

I always knew it but what disturbs me greatly is the evident fact that MediaCom logs everything I do on he computer and I am not liking this.  The fact that they do this and I am not some deviant sexual pervert, that I never knowingly downloaded anything copy writed, that I have never broken any law, other than a speeding ticket, and they still track me is unacceptable. It's like having the Department of Justice station an agent behind me looking at everything I do on the screen.

I like the idea that with PIA they can't follow me and if asked they can't tell anything other than maybe the times I was online and the bytes or whatever I uploaded/downloaded.

I have two computers; a laptop and desktop and I will never again in my life log on without PIA up and running on anything I am doing.
