Teamviewer and VPN (PIA)

Hello. Please help me with following situation. I use vpn to anonimyze myself. I guess vpn successfully anonimyze my skype (I checked it with mostwantedhf.info and my ip changed from my provider's ip to vpn's ip, so skype is no worry now).

Vpn is always on. So I connect to my computer from another one (the notebook) via teamviewer. And what's strange for me, is that I can disconnect vpn and Teamviewer is still working. Then I can connect vpn again, and Teamviewer connection is still working.

So I became worried - vpn does not anonimyze teamviewer? Teamviewer connects directly through my provider, not through vpn? So when I show people my desktop through teamviewer, our connection is not anonimized through vpn?

Thank you.

  • I haven't tested this myself. But I believe Teamviewer has an option to directly connect over LAN if it works out that both machines are on the same network. And I believe PIA (rightfully) doesn't tunnel LAN connections, so when you connect from your notebook connected on the same network the state of PIA's connection doesn't interfere with the Teamviewer connection.
  • I understand what you say.

I tested itwith android Teamviewer via mobile internet (not same network as my desktop). Still I managed to disconnect PIA and then connect again without teamviewer dropping.

Teamviewer may use disconnected operation, i.e. when the connection dies it transparently reestablishes in the background without showing you any errors.

Have you tried using the kill switch feature?

Yes, If you have a permanent account With teamviewer, where you log in with a username and password, and you have your computer set up to show up In that list so you can log in with any other computer, your computer is always broadcasting it's current external IP and port back to teamviewer's home server so that you are able to connect.

When you connect or disconnect a VPN, it adjusts, broadcasts the new information, and then your connection in your app client or web browser client catches up silently moves you over to the new connection without any notification that it did that.

This is why I use teamviewer actually. I love that I can Remote Desktop into my computer and even if I need to make VPN adjustments before starting more torrents or whatever, I can do it and essentially stay connected.
  • My kill switch is enabled.

Khariz, I don't have permanent account with teamviewer, but I log in using permanent password I wrote down.

So if I use teamviewer to show other people my screen, those people will connect to me through vpn? And that way they cant possibly see my ip in their logs, as I understand.

Yeah. Someone connecting via teamviewer only uses that proprietary number that the client spits out. That matches them up with the teamviewer server which will hand over the VPN IP your client is using if you are connected to teamviewer over VPN.
  • Is there anyway to hide my activity from my employer if they have installed team viewer on my company laptop?

This is a very old post and you should really start a new thread. However, you might be able to use a configurable Firewall (i.e. Comodo) to deny the TeamViewer application from connecting once the VPN has started. I do this for my email client to prevent me from connecting to Gmail when I VPN to a different country.
