Proxifier: A Working Example (OSX Guide)

edited October 2012 in VPN Setup Support
Disclaimer:
I am doing this on Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)
Do not rely on me to provide support, assume this all I know. Support may chime in to answer your questions.
uTorrent will generate a lot of errors in the Connection log window (ref. to image '2.III.a Proxy') when starting, this is normal. Just wait.
I have NOT tested many applications with this, feel free to report your experience.
I have tried to get this working on Windows with no luck. Authenticating always fails.
There is a HTML version for offline use here

The following is what Support has to say on the subject of the use of applications such as this:
We recommend using a program's native socks support rather than a socksifier/proxifier if it exists, since socksifiers/proxifiers will not work with all applications due to the proxifier or how the application works, not the socks proxy itself.
In that sense, using a proxifer for all applications is not recommended/supported, and done at your own risk.
Using a proxifier on the whole system or on the PIA application will cause problems for the PIA application.
With that said, we recommend you use always use VPN, that said socks is preferable for certain individual in certain situations:
- you only care that the website or peer you connect to doesn't see your actual ip address
- you don't need privacy from ISP/govt, because they can still see into your socks traffic
- your VPN password isnt the same password you use elsewhere or for anything important because its transmitted over the internet in plain text. (socks5 is not SSL encrypted)

3. Connecting.

1: Introduction.

1.I What we are trying to accomplish:

Basically; we're trying to connect to the internet through the proxy provided by PrivateInternetAccess using the Proxifier application. Specifically; we're going to do this for only a set amount of applications e.g. just Firefox and uTorrent and everything else will use your regular internet connection or VPN. Simple.

Note: While setting this up I was listening to Spotify and checking my IP in another browser, both worked as expected.

   1.II What you need:

0. A PrivateInternetAccess account.
1. An internet browser (e.g. Firefox, Chrome, Safari) or other application you wish to proxify (e.g. uTorrent, Transmission)
2. Proxifier (31 Days free / $40 USD)

   1.III How to get it:

I assume you have the basics: a working; computer, browser and internet connection.
Proxifier for OSX: Here
Sorry Linux users this one is not for you.

   1.IIII Installation:

I think you can handle this on your own.

2: Setup.
   2.I Internet connection:

Before going any further you should check the application has internet access. Try load ifconfig.me in your browser or perform a task that requires internet activity (e.g. start Ubuntu torrent).

   2.II Browser or Other Application:

Please Note: these settings SHOULD NOT effect the Proxifier application. But they may be something to look at when troubleshooting.

If you have everything already setup then go to 2.c
If you don't or you have decided to use a separate browser for this specifically go and install your add ons and plugins setup the privacy and general settings how you like.

Some example of add ons are Adblock Plus, Ghostery, HTTPS Everywhere, NoScript.
Go through the settings if you have certain way you wish to configure your browser.

   2.III Proxifier.

      2.III.a Proxy:
On first start up you'll be asked for registration, continue with trial unless you have a licence.
You'll be taken to a window like so:
1

Click on Proxies icon.
2

Then Click Add on the right.
3

Enter

Address: proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com
Port: 1080
Select: SOCKS Version 5
Authentication: Enable
Username: USERNAME
Password: PASSWORD
4
Select OK then you'll get
4a
Use as default: No.
IF you clicked yes go to rules and set Action for Default rule to Direct.
This will mean anything not specified will go through your normal internet connection.

      2.III.b Rules:

Click on the Rules Icon
5

Click Add
6

Change the name to whatever you want.

Then click the + button under the first white box and select your application, in this example I've selected Firefox and I get this:
6a
Click Yes

Leave the rest blank

Under Action select Proxy
7

Click OK

      2.III.c DNS:

Go to DNS icon
8

      2.III.d Advanced:

Going to the Advanced icon you firstly get to choose how you wish to store your password, choose whichever you feel comfortable with.

For the rest follow the screenshots.

3: Connecting.

Open your proxified application and try to connect to the internet. I opened Firefox and loaded ifconfig.me and it worked.
