Linux - Installing the PIA App

Install

The PIA application Supports systemd, sysvinit, and openrc based operating systems at this time, examples of these are Mint, Unbuntu, Arch, and Debian.

If you are unable to install the PIA App using the instructions on the Download page, please use the detailed step by step guide below!

Step 1: Download

If you have not already, download the PIA App installer here.

Note* If the installer page has not already started downloaded the file for you, click the following link: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/installer/x/download_installer_linux

Step 2: Run Installer

Once the installer has processed, you will then be prompted to save the installer file to your Downloads Folder on your operating system. Select ‘Save File’

Step 3: Terminal

After saving the file, you will then need to open Terminal.

Step 4: Change Directory

When prompted, you will need to change the directory in order to locate the installer. In order to change to the current location of the file, you will need to use the following command:

cd Downloads

Step 5: Run Installer via Command

Following the directory change, you will then need to run the application installer using the following command:

bash pia-linux-2.5-05652.run

The installer will prompt you for your [Root/Sudo] password (Note: do not run the installer with sudo)

Step 6: Login

After the application has successfully installed, the app will open to the Quick Tour/Login Window. Select Login and enter your login credentials, that were provided to you via the email address used upon signing up (i.e. Username p1234567).

After logging into the application, your credentials should be saved. The DEFAULT DISPLAY will be the primary window you use when interacting with the application day to day. In the image shown below, the power button shows yellow, meaning you are currently disconnected. Step 7: Connecting

Use the Power button to establish a connection — it may take some time to establish the connection, this is normal.

Note* If you are unable to connect, please reference our connection issue article as your first troubleshooting step.

Once the connection is established, the Power button will turn green and the application will list the VPN Server's IP.
