Open the Linux terminal from the Applications menu or by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the desktop.
If you have not already done so, download the PIA Legacy app installer to your Home directory by typing the following commands into the terminal:
Press Enter, then type:
(This command downloads the most recent version of our Legacy app, v82. Earlier versions of the application are available here.)
After typing the command, press Enter. The download will begin, which may take a few minutes to complete.
Uncompress the downloaded installer by typing this command, then press Enter again:
tar -xzf ./pia-v82-installer-linux.tar.gz
Run the installer by typing this command and pressing Enter:
Note: If you are installing a version older than 83 you will need to change the version number within the above commands to the version you are installing.
During the process you may be prompted for your sudo/root password. Type it in and then press Enter once more:
After the installation is complete, you will see the message “Installation Complete!”
Once the installation process is completed the application will ask you to enter your login credentials (username will be similar to “p1234567” - these credentials can be found in the message sent to your email address at the time of account purchase). After entering these credentials click the Save button at the bottom of the app controls.
Congratulations! You are now ready to begin utilizing your safe and anonymous VPN connection.
To start the VPN connection, click the red PIA icon in your menu bar and click either “Connect Auto” (to automatically select the best, fastest available server) or click on the “Connect to” menu option to manually connect to a specific VPN region:
Once connected, the PIA icon will turn green and a brief popup notification will indicate your device is connected:
That’s it! Your internet connection is now protected by the VPN.
