MacOS - Setting up a L2TP Connection

Alternative Setups

The PPTP/L2TP/SOCKS5 protocols are provided for devices lacking compatibility with the Private Internet Access application or OpenVPN protocol. PPTP/L2TP/SOCKS5 should be used for masking one's IP address, censorship circumvention, and geolocation.

If you need encryption, please use the Private Internet Application or OpenVPN protocol with our service.

This configuration uses a Generated PPTP/L2TP/Socks5 Username and password, If you have not generated this yet, please follow the steps here: Generating a Password for PPTP/L2TP/SOCKS

Step 1: System Preferences

From the Apple Menu, click System Preferences

Step 2: Network

Click on Network and then click the + located on bottom left.

Step 3: Create New Network

A new window will appear that will prompt you to create your new network, Here you will need to setup the connections Interface, VPN type and Service name.

  1. Select VPN from the Interface drop down menu

  2. Select L2TP over IPsec from VPN Type the drop down menu

  3. Type Private Internet Access L2TP as the Service name

Once Completed Click Create

Step 4: Configure Connection

Once you have created your L2TP Connection you can now setup the configuration. This will include the Configuration name, Server Address and Account name.

  1. Select the drop down menu for the Configuration and click Add Configuration. Then type in the server location you wish to use. (example: US California)

  2. Next you will enter in the Server address, enter

  1. Last you will need to enter your Generated Username (example username x1234567) If you have not generated this yet, please follow the steps here: Generating a Password for PPTP/L2TP/SOCKS

Step 5: Authenticate

Once you have filled in the above select Authentication Settings

Step 6: Login

A new window will appear where you will be able to Enter your Password in the top box

Step 7: Shared Secret

Enter the following for Shared Secret: mysafety

Make sure to Leave Group Name blank. Once done Click OK

Step 8: Advanced Settings

Enable the option "Show VPN status in the menu bar", then click Advanced

Step 9: Advanced Options

Ensure that Send all traffic over VPN is checked. Press OK

Step 10: Apply Changes

Once every thing has been completed Press Apply

Step 11: Connect

Use the VPN Status icon in the Menu bar to connect.
