NOTE: Only select ASUS routers support OpenVPN client configuration.
ASUSWRT is one of the only router firmwares that supports an OpenVPN connection out of the box.
This tutorial will walk you through configuring your ASUSWRT router to connect to PIA using pre-made OpenVPN config profiles.
Step 1. To start, select VPN from the options on the left sidebar. Select the VPN Client tab
Step 2. Select Add Profile
Please note, ONLY the OpenVPN config files linked below will work for this setup. ASUSWRT still runs OpenVPN 2.3, which is incompatible with the majority of the config files linked on our site.
If you would like to use the OpenVPN Configuration Generator to create custom files, be sure to select the OpenVPN 2.3 option.
Step 3. Download an OpenVPN configuration file for the location you would like to connect to. Disregard the mention of iOS on this page — these config files contain an embedded CA which sets them apart from our other available config files.
Step 4. Enter your PIA username and password in the Username and Password fields. Even though the firmware displays this as (option), your username and password are necessary to connect to PIA.
Step 5. Leave the Import the CA file or edit the .ovpn file manually option unchecked.
Step 6. Upload your desired .ovpn config file and click OK
Step 7 Once you’ve added the VPN profile, click Activate to check your connection. If the connection is successful, you’ll see a blue checkmark under your connection status, as above. You may need to reboot your router before a connection can be established.
Step 8. In cases where you can't connect after adding the OpenVPN client profile, changing DNS often resolves the issue.
Step 9. Click on the WAN tab
Step 10. Change Connect to DNS Server Automatically to No
DNS Server1: 184.108.40.206
DNS Server2: 220.127.116.11
Congratulations, you’ve now set up an OpenVPN connection on your ASUSWRT router!
