Windows - Setting up a L2TP Connection

Alternative Setups

The PPTP/L2TP/SOCKS5 protocols are provided for devices lacking compatibility with the Private Internet Access application or OpenVPN protocol. PPTP/L2TP/SOCKS5 should be used for masking one's IP address, censorship circumvention, and geolocation.

If you need encryption, please use the Private Internet Application or OpenVPN protocol with our service.

This configuration uses a Generated PPTP/L2TP/Socks5 Username and password, If you have not generated this yet, please follow the steps here: Generating a Password for PPTP/L2TP/SOCKS

Step 1: Quick Links Menu

On your Keyboard, hold down the Windows Key + X Key to open the Quick Links Menu and Click on Network Connections

Step 2: Network and Sharing Center

From the Network Status scroll down and click on Network and Sharing Center

Step 3: Change Network Settings

From here select Set up a new Connection or network located under the Change your network Settings section.

Step 4: Connect to Workplace

A new window will open providing you with a list of connection options. Select Connect to a Workplace and click Next

Step 5:  How to Connect

Next you will need to choose how you want your new connection to connect. Select Use my Internet Connection (VPN)

Step 6: Input Server and Destination Name

You will then be asked to enter information for your connections, enter the Following

  1. For Internet Address, input us-east.privateinternetaccess.com

Or if you prefer to use a specific location, you can find the full list of locations here.

  1. For Destination Name, input Private Internet Access L2TP

Once you have filled in the information check the Option “Allow other people to use this connection” if you want other users on the computer to be able to use the VPN connection

When all is done select Create

Step 7: New L2TP Connection

Once the above is done,  you can now see your new L2TP connection with in your Network list within your Taskbar. Don’t click on the connection yet

Note: To view this list select the up ^ within your taskbar located next to your clock.

Step 8: Quick Links Menu

Hold the Windows Key + X Key again and select Network Connections

Step 9: VPN

Within the Network Connections select the VPN option among the list of options on the left side.

Step 10: Connect/ Login

Select the L2TP Connection option and select Connect. Windows will then prompt you to Sign in with your PIA Username and Password. Click OK

Note: You must use the 'x' username, and password to connect to L2TP.

Step 11: Verify Connection

To verify that you are connected visit our website here, and at the top of the site it will state “You are protected by PIA” in green lettering
