What Is myrouter.local? How to Access Your Router Settings

Updated on Mar 5, 2026 by Andjela Nikolic

myrouter.local is a shortcut web address you can use to quickly access your router’s settings page on some Linksys routers, instead of having to remember and use the router’s IP address.

This article features step-by-step guides for accessing myrouter.local and changing key settings. You’ll also learn what to do if the address doesn’t load and how you can reach your router’s admin panel another way.

How to Access myrouter.local

First, make sure your device is connected to the router either via its Wi-Fi network or using an Ethernet cable.

  1. Open your web browser and type myrouter.local in the address bar. Press Enter.

  1. Once it loads, you’ll see a login page. The default credentials are typically username: (leave blank) and password: “admin” (or “admin” for both fields). If that doesn’t work, you can usually find the login credentials on a label on your router or in the manual.

If myrouter.local won’t load, try accessing your router’s admin panel using your router’s IP address. You can find the instructions on how to find your router IP below.

myrouter.local Doesn’t Work: How to Find Your Router IP Address

Note that the http://myrouter.local address only works for routers that use that hostname – that’s mostly Linksys routers. If you’re using another router brand, try the correct URL for your device.

BrandLocal Address
Linksysmyrouter.local
Netgearrouterlogin.net
TP-Linktplinkwifi.net
ASUSrouter.asus.com
D-Linkdlinkrouter.local
AppleNo hostname

If you still can’t access your router, follow the steps below to find and use your router’s IP address instead. You can usually find it on a sticker on the back or the bottom of the router. If it’s not there, you can find the router’s IP address through one of your connected devices.

How to Update Your Router Firmware (Once You’re In!)

Most routers upgrade their firmware automatically. However, some older models sometimes miss the newest patches, so you may need to check for updates manually to install the latest security fixes.

Update via the Admin Panel

To update your router firmware through myrouter.local, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Administration, System, or Firmware Update (varies by brand).
  2. Click Check for Updates.
  3. Download the latest firmware for your model.
  4. Click Update and wait.

Update Through the Manufacturer’s Website

If an automatic update fails due to a download error or installation issue, a manual update can often resolve it:

  1. Visit your router manufacturer’s website and go to the Support or Downloads section to locate the firmware files for your router model. You can usually find this on a label on the back or bottom of your router.
  2. Download the latest available firmware version for your router.
  3. Once on your computer, unzip the downloaded file so the firmware is in a usable format, typically ending in .bin or .img.
  4. Access your router and log into its web interface. Enter your admin username and password to access the dashboard, then look for the Firmware Update or Router Upgrade option.
  5. Click on Manual Update or Choose File, then upload the extracted firmware file.
  6. Wait for the update to complete. Your router may reboot automatically. Don’t unplug it during this process.

How to Change Your Wi-Fi Password in Your Router’s Admin Panel

  1. Access your router and use your admin username and password to log in.
  2. Look for a section labeled Wireless Settings, Wi-Fi Settings, or SSID & Password. You may see 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. If you use both, update both.
  3. Find the Password, Passphrase, or Pre-shared Key field. Enter your new password, and make sure it’s secure: at least 12 characters, a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  4. Save the changes. Your router may restart, and your devices will disconnect from Wi-Fi.

You’ll then have to reconnect all devices that use the Wi-Fi network using the password. The same will happen if you change your Wi-Fi network name.

How to Configure a VPN on Your Router (and Why You Need One)

Setting up a VPN on your router applies encryption to traffic from all the devices connected to your network, including devices that don’t natively support VPN apps, like your PlayStation or Xbox

However, not all routers support VPNs, and when it comes to Linksys routers specifically, only a few do. To confirm compatibility, check your VPN provider’s website for a list of supported routers.

If your router and VPN are compatible, the setup isn’t too complicated. Here’s a general guide:

  1. Download the VPN configuration files to your device. Private Internet Access lets you generate configuration files for whichever location you want. You can download the config files from your account dashboard on PIA’s website.
  2. Access the router admin panel and find the VPN settings. This is usually under the Services tab. Depending on your router model, you’ll see a list of security protocols your device uses to send and receive data, including PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN.
  3. Enable OpenVPN Client and apply settings. Depending on your router model, you may see the option to upload the .ovpn file or to copy and paste its contents into the corresponding fields.

The exact steps vary by router model, and you can find the instructions for setting up PIA VPN on compatible routers here.

If your router doesn’t support VPNs, you may need to install compatible third-party firmware such as DD-WRT or OpenWRT before proceeding. Keep in mind that this is a complex process that carries potential risks and requires advanced configuration knowledge.

Installing custom firmware may also void your router’s warranty. If you’d rather avoid that route, you can get a FlashRouter with PIA pre-installed.
