* Note from the editor * This is the first part of the all new “Tutorial Tuesdays”.
Each week we will post some type of tutorial, tips or guide  that will improve your experience when using a VPN.

How to get cheaper flights by using a VPN

1. Ensure you are using a fresh session.
Flight and travel companies use cookies to see when you’re looking for flights and will bump up your prices accordingly.  I’ve discussed my personal setup in the past, however I use Firefox with an auto-destructing cookies add-on which wipes my cookies 5 seconds after a tab is closed (“This message will self destruct in 5 seconds…” Mission Impossible style).

You can find more about my personal security setup in the footer information in the the Best Practices guide I wrote which are available at: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/kb/articles/security-best-practices

2. Use the destination country.
There are 2 possible ways to secure a discount that I am aware of.  I have heard that some VPN customers select a low income country as the VPN server choice, but I am unaware of the actual effectiveness.

The method that I utilise is using the destination country (so if I was flying from the UK to the US, I would choose a US server).

And because pictures paint a thousand words, this was my result for a flight using Expedia from the UK, 1 Adult, Business Class, September 11 till September 15:

No VPN:
no vpn, expensive flight

Using a VPN connected through my destination country:

This is for the exact same plane, same date and same parameters. The only difference was that I used PIA to connect to the destination country in the second example, dropping the price from  £5093 to £1676, a savings of over 67%!

So, next time you are planning a trip, make sure follow these steps to get a massive discount on your airfare and when you do – let us know in the comments below!
