How to Get Unbanned from a Discord Server

Look, it happens. People get banned. Sometimes they had it coming, but not always. You might have been banned by a misclick, or worse, a bot. Silly bots, they have absolutely no understanding of context. Whatever the reason, there are plenty of people who get banned without actually doing anything wrong. And sometimes, people break the rules by accident, and just want a second chance.
Whatever the case, the team here at PIA VPN believes in second chances – and the fallibility of bots – so we’re here to help. If you want to try to get yourself unbanned, there are some things you can try.
All it takes is a few minutes, some help from PIA VPN, and – in the worst case scenario – the willingness to apologize for any misunderstandings. Here’s how to do it:

Try Talking to People
Listen, the only ones who can unban your main Discord account from any server are those people who created and/or moderate the server. If you think you’ve been banned in error, try to message the relevant parties directly to make your case, and politely ask to be unbanned. If it was a mistake, you’ll likely be reinstated to the server in short order.
If you don’t have the server creator or moderator in your friends list, try to find another friend who is also on the server. Ask them if they’ll talk to the moderators on your behalf, and make your case for you.

Join With Another Account and a VPN
If you don’t have any other way to contact the people in charge, there is a way to get around the ban. It requires two ingredients: a new Discord account, and a different IP address. You can do it in a couple of minutes with PIA – the best VPN for Discord:
- Log out of Discord
- Create a new account with a separate email address
- Sign up for PIA VPN and install it on your device
- Connect to a VPN server location where your Discord server is available
- Join the Discord server again
Now that last part might be a little tricky, unless you can find an invite code posted somewhere public. If you can’t, there’s a process you can follow to join the server again on PC:
Go to Discord’s Settings page, then to Privacy & Safety. On the right side menu, check the box that says Developer Mode. Then, look in the Discord Server List page for the server you got banned from.
Right click on it, and select “Copy ID.” Now go into a browser window, and type in: “discordapp.com/api/guilds/[paste the number you copied here, no brackets]”
Press “Enter” and you’ll see the Discord app pop up with an invite to join the server again. Once you’re in, don’t hesitate to contact the relevant parties and state your case via direct message. Don’t ask about your ban on the server itself. Unless it was a total accident, it probably won’t go well for you.
Caveat: Phone Number Verification Could Trip You Up
Some servers require all prospective members to have verified their phone number with Discord to join at all. This is a measure introduced to make it a lot harder to bypass the IP and account bans. After all, it costs money to get a new phone number that’s not already associated with any active Discord accounts.
If you don’t have the option of getting a new phone number to verify on your new account, you’re basically blocked forever unless you can reach the server moderators by some other means.
PIA VPN has apps for just about every device where Discord can be installed: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. It can even work with Discord on consoles, via a VPN-enabled router.
How Discord Server Bans Work and Why People Get Banned
Understanding how to unban yourself from a Discord server requires that you learn how bans work. When you’re banned, two things get blocked from the server: your account, and your IP address. In order to bypass the ban, you’ll need to change both of these.
But a lot of people also wonder why they get banned from Discord, or any given Discord server.
Well, Discord themselves will “platform ban” people for: hate speech, harassment and/or threats, distributing any kind of illegal material, abusing the Discord API, doxxing, and breaking other common-sense rules. Users can receive Warnings, Temporary Bans of up to four years, or Permanent Bans.
Individual servers can have their own rules, of course. Bans can also happen because of automated systems, misclicks, and other accidents. The admins may or may not tell you what you’ve done wrong. Be sure to read the rules of every server when you join.
Lastly: Consider Taking the L
I’d be remiss if I didn’t address this. Sometimes, it’s best to know when to leave well enough alone. Even if your ban was objectively unfair, sometimes the people who run Discord servers won’t see things from your point of view. Even if they let you back in, you might feel like you’re under Damocles’ sword every time you send a message, and that’s just not worth the stress.
The beauty of the internet is that you have a place out there, a community that’s just waiting for you. It might be hard to find, but it’s worth finding. Or you can make your own server – if you have the time for that sort of thing.
Why PIA VPN is the Best VPN for Discord and Gaming

Whether you’re looking for a powerful gaming VPN or just want to bypass an erroneous IP ban, PIA is your best choice for several reasons: firstly, the servers are crazy fast. Need to voice chat, stream your game on Discord, and play a fast-paced online game all at once? PIA can handle that, and more, in milliseconds.
With VPN server locations in 91 countries, you can get a fast and smooth connection to any game server to reduce lag spikes and – in some circumstances – even lower your ping/latency.
On top of that, PIA masks your IP address and encrypts all traffic between you and the VPN server. This means that you can bypass blocks on Discord or any game at work or school, avoid ISP game traffic throttling, and add a layer of protection to your data.

FAQ
Yes. It’s certainly possible, depending on what kind of ban it is. If you’ve only been banned by one server, a polite conversation with the mods/admins might be enough to clear up any confusion or misunderstandings. For official bans, you can actually request a review of your ban to make sure it wasn’t a mistake made by automated moderation tools.
Server bans are indefinite. They can literally last forever, unless lifted by the moderators or creator of the server. As yet, there isn’t a way to ban someone temporarily, though there is a separate “kick” function. This works very similarly to a ban, but the individual can rejoin with an invite code. In other words, “kicking” is essentially a temporary ban.
Technically, yes. After an official ban, you can theoretically change your IP address and rejoin with a new account. But, if you think you were banned in error, this may not be the best idea. If you get caught rejoining the service, you’ll probably just get banned again, and Discord is less likely to ever rescind the original ban. It’s better to go through channels.
Yes. But there is more to it than that: every server ban is both an IP ban and an account ban. Rejoining to plead your case would require both a new account, and a new IP address. A VPN can easily take care of the second requirement, but keep in mind that the server may require all accounts to have a verified phone number, which could make it harder.
According to Discord, usually not. Direct messages are usually only examined by Discord’s moderation team if there’s been a report of harassment, hate speech, or some other Terms of Service violation. Moreover, DMs are not encrypted in their database. If there’s a breach of any kind, your DMs could be read.
Well, if the admins and moderators haven’t blocked you, you can message them directly to make your appeal. Since accidental bans do happen, it’s not impossible for the ban to be lifted that way. If you don’t have them on your friends list, see if you have any friends who are still on the server. You could ask them to intercede on your behalf.
Yes and no. The underlying technology knows what your IP address is, and Discord can certainly find it in one of its databases. But the creators and moderators of any given server can’t see your IP address, ever. One of the benefits of Discord over a P2P VOIP app is that it doesn’t expose your IP.
That depends. Every server has a different set of rules, enforced at the creator’s or moderators’ discretion. It could be you didn’t read the rules closely enough, and accidentally broke one of them. Or, it could have been an automated ban, as some channels use bots, which are far from infallible. Your mileage may vary.
