PIA in Q3: New Windows App for ARM-Based Computers
Microsoft launched its Copilot+ PC laptops earlier this year, boasting the ability to run artificial intelligence features without needing large amounts of battery power. But when the computers were introduced, no top-tier VPNs were compatible with its ARM-based technology. In September, PIA was pleased to launch a Windows app for ARM-based devices to protect users of Copilot+ PCs. Download it here.
Privacy and Security News
As privacy activists, we continuously monitor for any developments that could impact the digital environment. Here are a few notable events of the past three months.
California’s Governor Vetoes AI Safety Bill
The bill, overwhelmingly approved by California’s legislature, has been the US’s most aggressive in regulating artificial intelligence. Its focus is on placing guardrails on the largest AI models. Despite the broad support for the bill, Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed it, criticizing it for primarily considering the size of AI systems rather than the risks of the technology. Meanwhile, California has passed a law requiring social media platforms to label or block deepfakes—similar to existing laws in about a dozen other states—and it is set to take effect ahead of the US presidential election.
Blocking, and unblocking, X in Brazil
Brazil officially banned X within the country, but the ban has since been lifted. During the ban, the social media platform did briefly make itself available, eliciting a monetary fine by the country. The back and forth has forced the people of Brazil to endure the political tug-of-war between Elon Musk and the Brazilian government, which has taken issue with accounts that it claims spread disinformation.
US Election: Prime Time for Cyber Threats
As the US presidential election approaches, we’re keeping an eye out for an increase in cyber threats. Attackers are likely to leverage current events to launch cyberattacks, from phishing scams to malware downloads.
