How to Change Servers in League of Legends: Wild Rift

Posted on Jan 21, 2025 by Ezequiel Bruni

Riot just seems to love region-locking their stuff. Why? Oh, there’s probably some pretty decent explanation about infrastructure and ping, and providing the best possible experience for players. That’s fair.

What’s not fair is that you don’t have the choice of forgoing Riot’s vision of the optimal gaming experience in order to play with your friends on other continents. Friendly banter more than makes up for slightly higher ping, right? Well the good news is that you absolutely do have a choice in the matter.

With the right attitude, a few spare minutes, and Private Internet Access, you can change your League of Legends: Wild Rift server region, and crush friends and foes alike in one of the foremost mobile MOBAs. Read on to find out how it works.

Quick Guide to Changing Servers in Wild Rift with a VPN

  1. Sign up for PIA and set up the app on your phone or tablet
  2. Connect to a VPN server in the region where you want
  3. Start the game, make a new account, and play!

What You Need to Know About Changing Your Region in League of Legends: Wild Rift

The first thing you need to know is that there is no way to change your region in the game settings, and that the Account Transfers that Riot offers don’t affect Wild Rift. (But, if Account Transfers are what you’re looking for, there’s more info on that below.) No, there’s only one good way to change your region in League of Legends: Wild Rift, and that’s with a VPN. This does require a new account with the game (more info on that below, as well), and a separate email address for your new account.

If you’re following the step-by-step guide above, there are a couple of other things you need to know, starting with choosing your VPN server. You want one that’s as close as possible to the game server to get the best possible speeds. This can be a little tricky, as the servers for Wild Rift aren’t publicly listed.*

Lastly, people running the game on PC via an emulator – and if you have it working… wow. Nice! – can just download the PIA app for their host OS. With apps for Windows, Mac, and Linux, you’re basically covered.

* Note: it’s quite possible that at least some of the Wild Rift servers share locations with the servers for the PC versions of the game. According to the fan-maintained League of Legends Wiki, these servers are located in:

  • Sydney, Australia
  • Bahrain
  • São Paulo, Brazil
  • Santiago, Chile
  • Frankfurt, Germany
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Manila, Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Seoul, South Korea
  • Stockholm, Sweden
  • Taipei, Taiwan
  • Bangkok Thailand
  • Istanbul, Türkiye
  • Chicago, USA
  • Los Angeles, USA
  • Miami, USA
  • Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Why You Need to Create a New Riot Account

In short, because all Riot games are region locked in one way or another, and Wild Rift is no exception. Every account is (almost) inextricably linked to the region in which it was created, and will only allow you to play on servers in that region. It’s a mildly annoying limitation that has led many a gamer down the Google rabbit hole, searching for solutions.

The most common solution is just to make that separate account. Now, it does come with some downsides: everything you’ve unlocked on your main account will be unavailable. The Legends themselves, your skins and other cosmetics, your account progress, all of that simply cannot and will not transfer over to your new account. When you play in a new region, you’re essentially starting from scratch.

So, if you’re not moving to another country, and just want to play with some friends who live far away, you’d need to create a separate account for each region you want to play in. If you have lots of friends all over the world, that’s a lot of accounts.

It should be noted, though, that Wild Rift servers in North and South America are different from all the others in that they use a different infrastructure from the rest of the world. So accounts fall into two broad categories: The Americas, or any other region around the world.

This means that if you are in Canada, and want to play with a friend in Chile, you don’t actually need to create a new account. It’s all one big region.

How to Change Your Region with Riot Points

You might expect this to be something you can do with Wild Rift; after all, it’s easy enough to do on the regular League of Legends PC client, but that’s not the case. Changing your region with Riot points does not affect League of Legends: Wild Rift, and there is no other official mechanism for this sort of account transfer.

Now if your search for a way to change the region of your regular League of Legends account has led you to this post for some reason, we have you covered. It costs 2,600 Riot Points (roughly USD $20) and we have a step by step guide that outlines the process.

Why Choose PIA as Your #1 VPN for Gaming

PIA makes its case for being the best gaming VPN in several ways: first up, it has server locations in 90+ countries around the world. That means that no matter which Wild Rift servers you want to play on, you can.

But it’s not just about changing regions, no. All those server locations are part of what make PIA a fast VPN. Pick one that’s as close as possible to the game server you want to play on, and PIA will use the fastest route possible. This allows you to bypass a lot of problems like overcrowded networks and bad signal routing. This reduces lag spikes and, in some cases, can even lower your ping.

Even better, PIA adds a few layers of security to your connection. The LoL community is well known for its passion, and not everyone’s a good loser. By masking your IP address, and encrypting all traffic between you and the VPN server, PIA can add a layer of anonymity to your connection, and help to mitigate DDoS attacks.

On top of that, those same features also bypass network blocks on Wild Rift at school or work, so you can use your lunch break as you see fit. If anyone’s snooping while you play on unsecured public Wi-Fi, all they’ll see is encrypted gobbledygook instead of your payment information when you buy skins. It can even bypass ISP game throttling, for those cases where your ISP inexplicably decides to be the fun police.

FAQ

How do I change my region in Wild Rift?

The easiest way is with a VPN. Sign up for Private Internet Access, and download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Sign in, connect to a VPN server in the region where you want to play, then open up the game and create a new account. None of your progress will transfer over, but you can play.

How often can you change servers in LoL?

Using the official method to transfer your account with Riot Points? You’lll need to wait ninety days, or about three months, before doing it again. That’s every time, by the way. Using the VPN and multiple accounts method? As often as you like. Just sign out, connect to a VPN server in the region you want, and log into your account for that region.

Can I change my Riot account region?

Absolutely! You can do it via the PC League of Legends client, or the PC Teamfight Tactics client. For some reason, it’s not available in the browser, or on mobile devices, but that’s life. It costs 2600 Riot Points every time, which is about USD $20 at the time of writing. So just go to the store on PC, buy your points, and buy your account transfer.

How do you see what region your LoL account is in?

In League of Legends on the PC, it’s actually fairly easy. On the homepage of the client app, hover over your summoner icon, and you’ll see your region next to your summoner name. For Wild Rift players, it’s a little more complicated. You see which region you’re choosing when you first create your account… and then you never find it again.

Which server is in the Philippines in LoL?

For the PC version of the game, there are two, labeled PH and PH2, respectively. They’re said to be located in the city of Manila.

Is League of Legends region locked?

Oh boy is it ever! Yes, the region where you create your account becomes your home, forever, unless you create extra accounts in another region with the help of a VPN, or you pay Riot to change your region for you. If you have friends in various other parts of the world, and you’re not actually moving, the VPN method is a lot easier in general.
