Whether or not Grok is safe usually depends on who is using it and what they’re using it for. You may be a parent concerned about whether it’s appropriate for a teenager, or more generally worried about privacy on the platform, misleading answers, or the kinds of images and other content it can generate.

This guide looks at the different factors that can affect whether Grok is a sensible choice for you or your family, so you can decide what precautions, if any, are appropriate.

Grok is xAI’s generative AI assistant. It works in the same way as ChatGPT, Claude, and other popular AI chatbots. You interact with it by entering a prompt or submitting another input such as an image. Grok processes the request with xAI’s models and generates a response that can include text or media.

Grok can also search the web when it needs current information. It has separate access to public content on X, letting it reference posts when relevant. The specific models behind Grok may change over time, but the basic interaction works the same way.

You can use Grok on Grok.com, the official Grok mobile apps, or directly inside X. 

What Data Does Grok Collect?

Grok collects information about your account and how you use the service. The exact data depends on what you submit, the features you use, and how you sign in. This can include:

• Account information: Your name, contact details, login credentials, and date of birth when you create an account.
• Payment information: If you buy a subscription, xAI may use a payment provider to process your card and transaction details.
• Prompts and other user content: Anything you type or submit during a Grok conversation.
• Uploaded material: Files and supported media you send to Grok, such as images, audio, voice recordings, or video.
• Technical information: Your IP address and device details, along with information about your browser or operating system.
• Usage information: How you interact with Grok, including the features you use and your conversation history.
• Location information: xAI may estimate your general location from your IP address. It can also receive a more precise location if you choose to provide one.

How Does xAI Use or Review Your Grok Data?

xAI uses Grok data to run the service and provide support. It can also use it to communicate with users or protect the service from misuse. Legal obligations can give xAI another reason to process or disclose information, while contracted service providers can receive data to perform work for xAI.

Retention

You can keep saved conversations in your account for as long as you want. If you delete a conversation or your account, xAI can take up to 30 days to remove the relevant data from its systems. Private Chats follow the same 30-day removal window.

xAI can keep some information longer when safety or legal obligations require it. It can also retain data after de-identifying or pseudonymizing it.

Model Improvement

xAI can use ordinary Grok interactions to train its models. This can include prompts, searches, other material you submit, and Grok’s responses.

If you sign in to Grok, you can turn off Improve the Model to stop xAI from using new conversations for training. This change only applies going forward. It doesn’t erase earlier conversations or remove new chats from your history.

If you voluntarily send feedback about a response, xAI can still use that feedback for training. Using Grok without signing in may present different training choices depending on your region.

Authorized Human Review

A limited number of authorized xAI staff can review some Grok conversations for specific reasons, such as investigating suspected misuse or security incidents, meeting legal obligations, or evaluating model performance.

Private Chat gives you more privacy than an ordinary Grok conversation, but it doesn’t make you anonymous on the platform.

Grok keeps Private Chats out of your normal conversation history and excludes their content and interactions from model training. The retention rules explained above still apply.

That said, Private Chat still has limits. It doesn’t stop xAI from processing information about the interaction or turn Grok into an end-to-end encrypted channel.

Additional Privacy Controls

Grok allows you to manage some of the data tied to your account:

• Delete saved conversations: Remove a single chat or clear your full conversation history.
• Delete your account: Close your xAI account when you no longer want to use the service.
• Revoke shared conversation links: Disable public links you created for past chats.
• Control X personalization: Decide whether standalone Grok can use your X activity to tailor your experience.

Be careful with shared conversation links. Anyone who gets the URL can open the chat, and search engines may index it if you post it publicly. Revoking the link blocks access through that URL, but it doesn’t delete the original conversation.

Does Grok.com Have the Same Privacy Rules as Grok on X?

Grok.com and the standalone Grok apps follow xAI’s consumer privacy rules. When you use Grok through X, X’s privacy policy and terms govern that use instead.

That distinction affects which privacy settings and data controls apply. A setting available on standalone Grok may work differently on X, so check the controls for the version you use.

How Does xAI Protect Grok Data?

xAI employs technical safeguards and internal access controls to help protect the information it stores from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or unwanted changes.

These safeguards lower the risk of unauthorized access or a data breach, but they don’t remove it completely. No online service can guarantee that stored information will always remain secure.

Your own account security matters too. Use a strong password and protect any device where you stay signed in to Grok, since someone with access to your account could also reach information stored there.

What Are the Main Safety Risks of Using Grok?

Some of Grok’s main safety risks come from the content it generates rather than how the service handles your data. These problems can arise even when Grok works as intended.

Grok Can Give Incorrect or Misleading Answers

Grok may invent details, misread information from a source, or present an uncertain claim as though it were settled.

Can a VPN Make Grok Safer or More Private?

A VPN can improve your network-level privacy while you use Grok, but its protection applies to your connection rather than your interactions with Grok itself.

A VPN sends your traffic through an encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN server. Grok then sees the VPN server’s IP address instead of yours, which can also prevent Grok from using your usual IP to estimate your general location.
